About Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a comprehensive public research university founded in 1737 during the Age of Enlightenment by King George II of Great Britain (Georg August). It is one of the oldest universities in Germany and operates as a foundation university under public law — the first comprehensive German university to adopt this status, in 2003. With approximately 28,500 students across 13 faculties, it covers nearly all academic disciplines from natural sciences and medicine to humanities and social sciences (engineering is absent from the portfolio).
The university is a member of the U15 group of major German research universities and holds a strong position in the THE World University Ranking (national rank 10). Around 45 Nobel laureates are associated with the university and the wider Göttingen research community. The institution hosts four graduate schools that coordinate doctoral training and runs excellence clusters in fields including nanoscale microscopy and molecular brain physiology.
Approximately 11% of enrolled students are international, drawn from 138 countries. The university maintains 510 exchange partnerships across 90 countries and offers more than 50 English-language Master's and PhD programmes, making it a viable destination for non-German-speaking postgraduate applicants.

Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a public university in Niedersachsen and does not charge tuition fees for Bachelor's or consecutive Master's programmes, regardless of nationality (Niedersachsen has not introduced non-EU tuition fees, unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria). Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) each semester, which covers administration, the student union, Studierendenwerk services, and a public-transport semester ticket valid across Lower Saxony. Current amounts: Winter Semester 2026/27 — €484.18; Summer Semester 2026 — €466.40. Exchange students and scholarship holders with German public-funding documentation pay a reduced rate of approximately €409–411 per semester. Long-term students (exceeding standard study length by 6+ semesters) pay an additional long-term fee.
Admission requirements
International applicants must hold a higher-education entrance qualification recognised by the German KMK (anabin database). For programmes with restricted admission (Numerus Clausus), the application period runs 1 June to 15 July for the winter semester; open-admission programmes allow enrolment from 1 June to 30 September. Language requirements vary by programme: German-taught programmes require a recognised German-language certificate (TestDaF TDN 4, DSH 2, or Goethe C1/C2); English-taught programmes require English proficiency proof (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent). Non-EU applicants require a student visa and health insurance before enrolment; measles vaccination proof is also required at matriculation. APS certificate: Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants are required to hold an APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) as a condition of the German student visa; the university's admission guide references specific procedures for non-EU citizens. Applicants are advised to use the university's interactive online application guide (eCampus) to determine the exact process for their chosen programme.
Application deadlines
For restricted-admission (NC) programmes: application window 1 June to 15 July (for the winter semester starting October). For open-admission programmes: enrolment possible from 1 June to 30 September (winter semester). Summer semester deadlines are not prominently published for international applicants — many Master's programmes only admit in the winter semester. Applicants should verify programme-specific deadlines via the university's eCampus portal or the international prospective students page.
Languages of instruction
The primary language of instruction is German. However, the university explicitly states that more than 50 Master's and PhD programmes are fully taught in English. English-taught Master's examples include Applied Computer Sciences, Development Economics, International Economics, Molecular Medicine, Neurosciences, Forest and Ecosystem Sciences, and Crop Protection. A small number of English-taught Bachelor's programmes also exist (e.g. Ecosystem Sciences B.Sc., Intercultural Theology B.A.). Some programmes in the humanities require German proficiency at B2 or C1 level even if partly taught in English. German-language instruction programmes require TestDaF TDN 4, DSH 2, or equivalent.

Living in Niedersachsen
Göttingen is a mid-sized university city of approximately 120,000 residents in the state of Niedersachsen, southern Lower Saxony. With around 31,000 students it has one of the highest student-to-resident ratios in Germany, giving it a distinctly young and international atmosphere. The city is recognised as a "City of Science" and is home not only to the university but also to a dense cluster of Max Planck Institutes and other research institutions. Göttingen lies on the intercity rail corridor between Frankfurt and Hanover, with fast-train connections to both within one hour.
Student life & support
The International Office (located at Von-Siebold-Straße 2, 37075 Göttingen) coordinates support for incoming international students, including a buddy/pick-up service, welcome activities, housing assistance, visa and registration guidance, and health insurance orientation. The university has dedicated India and China advisors within the International Office. The Studierendenwerk Göttingen manages approximately 4,500 student housing spaces across halls of residence and shared apartments; the Mahatma-Gandhi-House offers accommodation specifically for international students. Early application for housing is strongly recommended as demand peaks in April and October. German language courses are available through the university's German language lectorate and the Institute for Intercultural Communication (IIK Göttingen). The Foyer International supports cross-cultural exchange. University sports facilities (Hochschulsport) offer a wide range of activities. The semester ticket included in the Semesterbeitrag covers regional public transport across Lower Saxony.
