APS India makes the final decision, not this tool. This is only a guide based on the APS India dMAT field list v1.0 (29 June 2026), and the official list can change. For the final answer, always check the official APS PDF and website above.

What is the dMAT, and why it matters

The dMAT is a digital aptitude test. From the Summer 2027 intake, APS India asks some Master's applicants from India to sit it before their application to a German university can move ahead. It checks reasoning and applied thinking in English, not memorised facts. The test itself is run by g.a.s.t.; whether you need it is decided by APS India based on your bachelor's field.

Who has to take the dMAT?

It comes down to your previous degree. APS India groups affected fields into three families:

  • Engineering: B.E./B.Tech branches such as Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and Computer Science and Engineering.
  • Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics: B.Com and its specialisations, Banking, Taxation, and Economics degrees.
  • Business and Management: BBA, BBM, BMS, Business Administration, and Management Studies.

Here is the catch that trips people up: a field is not judged by the word in its name. Standalone Data Science, Computer Science without an Engineering designation, BCA, IT, and Artificial Intelligence are not automatically included. Sector-specific fields like Hotel Management and Hospitality are assessed case by case. Use the checker above to see where your exact degree falls.

Which intakes are affected?

Summer 2027 and later. If you are applying for Winter 2026/27 or earlier, you are not affected, because those certificates are issued before the requirement begins.

This page is a guide based on the official APS India dMAT field list (v1.0, 29 June 2026). APS India can update the list, so always confirm your degree on the official APS PDF and the APS India website. APS India makes the final decision.

dMAT questions people ask

What is the dMAT?
It is a digital aptitude test that APS India requires from some Master's applicants from India, starting with the Summer 2027 intake. It checks reasoning and applied thinking in English, not memorised facts. g.a.s.t. runs the test; APS India decides whether your degree needs it.
Which intakes does the dMAT apply to?
Summer 2027 and later. If you are applying for Winter 2026/27 or any earlier intake, the dMAT does not apply to you.
Which degree fields need the dMAT?
Three field groups: Engineering (B.E./B.Tech branches like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Computer Science and Engineering); Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics (B.Com and its specialisations, Banking, Taxation, Economics); and Business and Management (BBA, BBM, BMS, Business Administration, Management Studies).
Does the dMAT apply to Computer Science or Data Science degrees?
Only when the official title is an Engineering degree, such as Computer Science and Engineering. Standalone Computer Science, BCA, IT, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are not automatically covered unless APS India classifies your specific degree under an affected field group.
Does the dMAT apply to M.Sc or MBA applicants?
It depends on your bachelor's field, not the Master's you are applying to. If your bachelor's degree falls under one of the three affected groups, the dMAT can apply whichever M.Sc, M.A. or MBA you are targeting in Germany.
What if my degree is not on the affected fields list?
Then the dMAT most likely does not apply to you. APS India still makes the final call from your official documents, so confirm your exact degree on the official APS PDF before you plan around it.
Who makes the final decision on the dMAT?
APS India, based on your official degree title, branch, major, specialisation and documents. This checker is a guide built from the official APS field list; always confirm on the official APS PDF and website.
