German Grade Converter Free CGPA, Percentage & GPA Calculator → German 1.0–4.0 Scale

Convert your CGPA, percentage, or GPA to the German 1.0–4.0 scale using the official Modified Bavarian Formula — the same formula used by uni-assist and German universities for international admissions.

Also called the German grade calculator or Modified Bavarian Formula calculator, this tool converts grades from any standard system to the German 1.0–4.0 scale.

Tip: you can type either 8.6 or 8,6.

See the formula
German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin)

Where Nmax = highest possible grade, Nmin = minimum passing grade, Nd = your grade.

What does my German grade mean?

German universities use a 1.0–4.0 scale where lower is better — the opposite of GPA. Here's how it maps.

1.0–1.5 Sehr gut

Very good. You're competitive for top programmes at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, LMU, and Heidelberg.

1.6–2.5 Gut

Good. Strong fit for most Master's programmes at major German universities.

2.6–3.5 Befriedigend

Satisfactory. Eligible for many programmes; consider less competitive universities or applied-science (FH) options.

3.6–4.0 Ausreichend

Sufficient — the minimum to pass. Programme options are limited; we recommend a profile evaluation.

1,449 English-taught programmes in our database — many accept grades up to 2.5 with no German language requirement.

German grade calculator — frequently asked questions

How does the German grade calculator work?
The German grade calculator applies the Modified Bavarian Formula used by uni-assist and German universities: German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin), where Nmax is the highest possible grade in your home system, Nmin is the minimum passing grade, and Nd is the grade you achieved. The calculator returns a result rounded to one decimal between 1.0 (best) and 4.0 (passing).
What is a good German grade?
1.0–1.5 is sehr gut (very good), 1.6–2.5 is gut (good), 2.6–3.5 is befriedigend (satisfactory), and 3.6–4.0 is ausreichend (sufficient — minimum to pass). Most competitive Master's programmes in Germany expect 2.5 or better; top programmes at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen and similar typically want 2.0 or better.
How do I convert an Indian CGPA to a German grade?
For a 10-point CGPA, set Nmax = 10, Nmin = 4 (the typical minimum passing CGPA at Indian universities), and Nd = your CGPA. With a CGPA of 8.0, your German grade = 1 + 3 × (10 − 8) / (10 − 4) = 2.0. Some universities use Nmin = 5 — pick "India — 10-point CGPA (strict)" above to use that variant.
How do I convert an Indian percentage to a German grade?
Set Nmax = 100, Nmin = 33 (the standard pass mark in Indian board and university exams), and Nd = your percentage. With 75%, your German grade = 1 + 3 × (100 − 75) / (100 − 33) = 2.1.
Will German universities accept this conversion?
Yes — the Modified Bavarian Formula is the standard used by uni-assist (Germany's central application service for international students) and the vast majority of German universities. Some institutions apply minor variations or use a country-specific lookup table, but the result is almost always within ±0.2 of this calculator. Always check the international admissions page of your target university for their specific policy.
What grade do I need for a Master's in Germany?
Most German Master's programmes require a 2.5 or better (gut). Top-tier programmes at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, ETH-aligned departments, and selective Master's at LMU often want 2.0 or better. Programmes at Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen) are typically more flexible and often accept 3.0+. Run your grade through the calculator above, then pick programmes whose published cutoff is at or above your number.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; no data is sent anywhere.
