About Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt
Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt (HSHL) is a public university of applied sciences in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, founded on 1 May 2009. It operates across two modern campuses — one in Hamm and one in Lippstadt — and has grown from 80 students in two programmes at founding to approximately 4,900 students enrolled across 24 degree programmes as of 2025.
The university focuses on engineering, natural sciences, computer science, and business, offering 14 bachelor's and 10 master's degree programmes. Teaching is characterised by small-group instruction, project-based learning from the first semester, and close ties to regional industry in the Ruhr and Münsterland belt.
HSHL operates a dedicated International Office and maintains academic partnerships in China, Brazil, Turkey, Poland, and Austria. One bachelor's programme (Electronic Engineering) and one master's programme (Intercultural Business Psychology) are taught entirely in English, making them accessible to international students without German language proficiency.

Living in Nordrhein-Westfalen
HSHL straddles two mid-sized cities in the western Ruhr/Westphalia region. Hamm (population ~175,000) offers a compact city centre within walking distance of campus, with a cinema, restaurants, the Lippe river embankments, canal-side paths, and the Maximare thermal baths. Lippstadt (population ~68,000) is a quieter, historically intact town in Westphalia, around 50 km east of Dortmund, with cycle-friendly infrastructure and affordable student housing.
Student life & support
Both campuses feature open-design communication zones intended as informal meeting spaces. Student representation bodies (AStA) are active at both sites. The International Office runs a buddy programme, tandem language partnerships, and tutor programmes to support incoming students. The Studierendenwerk Münster operates cafeterias and student housing options. Both cities are well connected by regional rail (S-Bahn/RE) to Dortmund, Münster, and Paderborn, giving students access to the broader Ruhr student scene.
