About Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt
Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt (HSHL) is a public university of applied sciences in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, founded on 1 May 2009. It operates across two modern campuses - one in Hamm and one in Lippstadt - and has grown from 80 students in two programmes at founding to approximately 4,900 students enrolled across 24 degree programmes as of 2025.
The university focuses on engineering, natural sciences, computer science, and business, offering 14 bachelor's and 10 master's degree programmes. Teaching is characterised by small-group instruction, project-based learning from the first semester, and close ties to regional industry in the Ruhr and Münsterland belt.
HSHL operates a dedicated International Office and maintains academic partnerships in China, Brazil, Turkey, Poland, and Austria. One bachelor's programme (Electronic Engineering) and one master's programme (Intercultural Business Psychology) are taught entirely in English, making them accessible to international students without German language proficiency.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
No tuition fees for any student (public university in NRW, no non-EU surcharge). Students pay a semester contribution of approximately €334-€363 per semester (Summer 2026: €334.30; Winter 2026/27: €362.80), which includes the NRW semester ticket for public transport.
Admission requirements
International applicants must have a university-entrance qualification recognised for Germany (check anabin). Applications are submitted through uni-assist, which evaluates foreign credentials. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must additionally hold an APS certificate before applying. German-taught programmes require DSH 2/3, TestDaF (minimum 4 points in all sections), Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe C2, or the KMK German Language Diploma Level 2. The two English-taught programmes (B.Eng. Electronic Engineering; M.Sc. Intercultural Business Psychology) require English language proof as specified by each programme. Applications are processed via the university's online portal (myHSHL) after the uni-assist evaluation report is received.
Application deadlines
Winter semester: applications typically open early April and close 9 September (Winter 2026/27 window: 7 April - 9 September 2026). Summer semester: applications typically open in December. The B.Eng. Electronic Engineering programme accepts applications from December for the following winter semester. Check hshl.de for exact dates each cycle.
How international applicants apply
Yes - uni-assist standard procedure, explicitly WITHOUT the special VPD/DOSV variant. Applicants with international education certificates must submit two applications: (1) evaluation via uni-assist My assist portal, and (2) direct application via HSHL's own 'Campus Office Online' portal (campusoffice.hshl.de). Both must arrive before the deadline. Exceptions: applicants who completed a German Studienkolleg with Feststellungsprüfung apply only via HSHL; Germans with foreign certificates still need uni-assist evaluation. uni-assist lists HSHL as a member university.
Languages of instruction
German for most programmes; selected English-taught offerings (e.g. materials-science bachelor leading to 'Sustainable Materials Engineering' master track); German B-level evidence required for German-taught degrees per enrolment rules.
Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.

Living in Hamm
HSHL straddles two mid-sized cities in the western Ruhr/Westphalia region. Hamm (population ~175,000) offers a compact city centre within walking distance of campus, with a cinema, restaurants, the Lippe river embankments, canal-side paths, and the Maximare thermal baths. Lippstadt (population ~68,000) is a quieter, historically intact town in Westphalia, around 50 km east of Dortmund, with cycle-friendly infrastructure and affordable student housing.
Student life & support
Both campuses feature open-design communication zones intended as informal meeting spaces. Student representation bodies (AStA) are active at both sites. The International Office runs a buddy programme, tandem language partnerships, and tutor programmes to support incoming students. The Studierendenwerk Münster operates cafeterias and student housing options. Both cities are well connected by regional rail (S-Bahn/RE) to Dortmund, Münster, and Paderborn, giving students access to the broader Ruhr student scene.
