About Technische Universität Hamburg

Hamburg University of Technology (Technische Universität Hamburg, TUHH) is a public research university founded in 1978, located in the Hamburg-Harburg district of Hamburg. It is organised into six schools — Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics; Process Engineering; Technology and Innovation in Education; Management Sciences and Technology; and Mechanical Engineering — plus a Joint School of Multidisciplinary Studies. The university's guiding principle is "technology for humanity," with a strong emphasis on research, interdisciplinarity, and international orientation.

TUHH currently offers 16 Bachelor's and 30 Master's programmes. One Bachelor's and 14 Master's programmes are taught entirely in English, making it a significant destination for international STEM postgraduates. The university employs around 1,500 staff from many nations and is home to the Cluster of Excellence BlueMat as well as a UNU Hub for climate change engineering. It participates in the ECIU University partnership network.

The campus — the Schwarzenberg-Campus — is a compact ensemble of 15 buildings set in a park landscape in Hamburg-Harburg, well connected to the city centre by S-Bahn lines S3 and S5 and close to Hamburg Harburg main-line rail station.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

Hamburg is a German state university and charges no tuition fees for the standard study period in Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, regardless of nationality. A semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is payable each semester; the exact current amount is not published on the pages retrieved and should be confirmed directly with TUHH's admissions office or the Studierendenwerk Hamburg.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised university-entrance qualification. A recognised Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, from an institution with adequate anabin standing) is required for Master's admission. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must obtain an APS certificate from the respective German Embassy before applying — the APS requirement is explicitly stated in TUHH's official application guidelines. English-taught programmes require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (TOEFL, Cambridge English, TELC, and UNICERT Online are also accepted); German-taught programmes require TestDaF or DSH. Applications are submitted via the university's online portal at tune.tuhh.de.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (starting October): deadline 15 July for all Bachelor's and German-language Master's programmes, and for selected English-language Master's programmes. For international English-taught Master's in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering the application window for Winter 2026/27 runs 1 June – 15 July; for most other international programmes the pre-check and online application open 1 December and close 1 February (approximately five months before the semester start). Summer semester (starting April): Computer Science and Electrical Engineering programmes accept applications 1 December – 15 January.

Languages of instruction

Most Bachelor's programmes and many Master's programmes are taught in German (requiring TestDaF or DSH proficiency). One Bachelor's programme (Engineering Science) and 14 Master's programmes are available entirely in English. Two joint European Master's degrees and an MBA (via the Northern Institute of Technology Management, NIT) are also on offer. TUHH also provides German language courses and language-café activities on campus to support international students.

Living in Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and a major port, media, and technology hub with a metropolitan population of around 1.8 million. TUHH is located in the Harburg district on the southern bank of the Elbe, approximately 15 minutes by S-Bahn from Hamburg city centre. The city offers a high quality of life, a large international community, a vibrant cultural scene, and strong links to industries such as aerospace (Airbus), logistics, renewable energy, and the digital economy — all fields closely aligned with TUHH's engineering focus.

Student life & support

The International Office's Incoming and Integration Services runs Welcome Weeks at the start of each semester, offering orientation events, city exploration activities, and administrative guidance (e.g., address registration, residence permit procedures). The Campus International programme provides intercultural workshops, Language Cafés, language tandem partnerships, and the Art & Culture Lab throughout the semester. German language courses are available on campus. Scholarship advising (including DAAD funding) is provided by the International Office. Student tutors are reachable via [email protected]. Housing is organised via the Studierendenwerk Hamburg, the regional student services organisation; applicants are advised to apply for a place in student halls early due to high demand in Hamburg.
