Language Requirements

Entry Requirements

English Proficiency

The university does not publish a general IELTS/TOEFL/PTE score requirement for admission; nearly all degree programmes are taught in German and require German proficiency instead (see german_requirement). The one stated exception is the M.A. Musicology and Music Education programme (specialisations Music Ethnology and Jewish Ethnology only), where sufficient knowledge of English, at a level set out in that programme's own regulations, may be demonstrated as an alternative to German - no specific band/score is published on the language-requirements page.

German Language

Proof of German proficiency (CEFR-based, B1 to C1 depending on degree programme) is required for admission to nearly all HMTMH degree programmes; exceptions are chamber music and the solo class, and the M.Mus. Chamber Music programme. Accepted certificates include Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, OeSD, TestDaF and DSH (thresholds vary by required CEFR level, e.g. DSH-1/TestDaF TDN3-average for B2, DSH-2/TestDaF 4xTDN4 for C1). For programmes requiring C1, certification is expected at application or at the latest upon enrolment; for B1/B2 programmes, by the start of the second semester (one extra semester possible with programme approval).
