The APS Certificate — Your Gateway to Germany
India is on the APS-required list. The Akademische Prüfstelle verifies your academic credentials. Here is how the process works for Indian students.
Prepare Documents
Gather your degree certificate, transcripts, degree certificates, mark sheets, and passport. All documents must be notarised with certified translations. Start collecting 2–3 months before your planned APS submission.
Apply via APS India
Indian students apply through the APS office in New Delhi (India). Submit your application online and pay the fee of approximately €150. You can also take TestAS as an alternative to the APS interview.
APS Interview
A 15–20 minute academic interview (online or in-person) about your coursework and thesis. Prepare by reviewing your major subjects and key projects. The pass rate is high if you know your own work.
Receive Certificate
Processing takes 4–8 weeks after the interview. Once you have your APS certificate, you can apply to any German university. The certificate is valid for all universities — apply to multiple programmes.

Scholarships for Indian Students in Germany
DAAD — Top Funding Source
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has a regional office covering India. DAAD scholarships cover monthly living allowances (€934–€1,300/month), health insurance, and travel costs. Since tuition is already free, DAAD recipients study in Germany at virtually zero cost.
DAAD scholarships are available for Master's, PhD, and research stays. Applications typically open 12–14 months before the programme start date. Indian students with strong academic records are competitive candidates given the high demand from India.
Other Scholarships
- Erasmus+ / Erasmus Mundus — EU-funded scholarships covering full tuition + living costs for joint Master's programmes across multiple European universities.
- Deutschlandstipendium — €300/month merit-based scholarship available after enrolment. Open to all nationalities including Indian students.
- Heinrich-Böll / Friedrich-Ebert / Konrad-Adenauer — German political foundation scholarships covering €934/month + tuition at private universities.
- Indian Government: National Overseas Scholarship — The India government occasionally offers scholarships for students going abroad. Check the Ministry of Education and UGC for current opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions — Indian Students Studying in Germany
Yes. German public universities charge zero tuition fees for all students, including Indian citizens. You pay only a semester contribution of €150–€350 (~INR 22,000–50,000), which typically includes unlimited public transport. The sole exception is Baden-Württemberg, where non-EU students pay €1,500 per semester — still far less than Indian private university tuition. This policy applies to Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD programmes at over 400 public universities.
Yes. India is on the APS-required list. Indian students must obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate to verify their academic credentials. You apply through the APS India office in New Delhi. The process involves submitting your documents and completing a 15–20 minute academic interview. Alternatively, you can take the TestAS standardised aptitude test. Processing takes 4–8 weeks. GradGermany guides you through every step of the APS process.
Over 2,000 programmes are taught entirely in English, especially at the Master's level. Fields like computer science, data science, engineering, business, and natural sciences have extensive English-taught options. For English-taught programmes, you typically need IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL 80–90. That said, learning basic German (A1–A2) significantly improves your daily life and career prospects. Many universities offer free German courses for enrolled students.
Apply for a German student visa at the German Embassy in New Delhi. Requirements: university admission letter, APS certificate, blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,904 (~INR 17 lakh) through Expatrio or Fintiba, health insurance proof, and valid passport. Processing takes 6–10 weeks. Book your visa appointment early — wait times can be long during peak season. After graduation, you qualify for an 18-month job-seeker visa automatically.
A two-year Master's degree in Germany costs approximately €18,000–€26,000 total (~INR 26–37 lakh) in living expenses, with €0 in tuition. This includes rent, food, insurance, and transport. Compare this to INR 10–25 lakh in tuition alone at Indian private universities, plus living costs. The blocked account requirement is €11,904 (~INR 17 lakh), released monthly at ~€992. Many students work part-time (140 full days/year) to offset costs.
Germany offers every graduate an 18-month post-study work visa — no lottery, no employer sponsorship. Germany has 700,000+ unfilled STEM positions. Starting salaries for Master's graduates average €45,000–€55,000 (~INR 65–80 lakh/year), with tech and engineering roles reaching €60,000+. Compare this to average Indian graduate salaries of INR 3–5 lakh/year. The EU Blue Card pathway leads to permanent residency within 21 months.
Step 1: Get your APS certificate (start 4–6 months before deadline). Step 2: Choose programmes on GradGermany. Step 3: Prepare documents — APS certificate, degree/transcripts, motivation letter, CV, language proof. No GRE or GMAT needed. Step 4: Apply through uni-assist (€75 first, €30 each additional) or directly. Step 5: Once accepted, open blocked account and apply for student visa at the German Embassy in New Delhi. Deadlines: July 15 (winter) and January 15 (summer). Start 8–10 months early.
India has the highest search interest globally for studying in Germany, and over 10,000 Indian students are already enrolled. The reasons: €0 tuition (vs INR 10–25 lakh/year in India), globally recognised degrees, 18-month work visa, high graduate salaries (€45K+ vs INR 3–5 lakh in India), and a clear pathway to permanent residency. Germany has been a top destination for Indian students seeking quality education at affordable cost, especially in engineering, IT, and management fields.
Yes. Many German universities accept TOEFL, the Duolingo English Test (105–115), PTE Academic, or a Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter proving your prior degree was taught in English — and some waive English tests entirely for applicants from English-medium Indian universities. For German-taught programmes, TestDaF or DSH is required instead of IELTS.
Not directly. A German Bachelor's requires either one completed year of a recognised Indian Bachelor's degree, or a one-year Studienkolleg foundation course followed by the Feststellungsprüfung exam. Indian Class XII alone does not meet the German university-entry qualification. Strong JEE Main results can open some direct pathways.
The blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement is €11,208 for one year — roughly ₹10–10.5 lakh — which is released back to you at about €934/month after you arrive. Open it with Fintiba, Expatrio, or Coracle before your visa appointment. It is the single largest upfront cost for Indian applicants.
The most common reasons are a weak or generic motivation letter (SOP) that doesn't match the chosen programme, an incomplete or under-funded blocked account, unexplained academic or work gaps, doubts about genuine-student intent, and APS or document issues. A clear study plan, correctly funded blocked account, and programme-specific SOPs are the biggest factors in approval.
Most Indian Bachelor's degrees from UGC/AICTE-recognised universities are accepted. Check your institution in the anabin database (the German government's recognition database) — an "H+" rating means it is fully recognised. A 4-year Bachelor's, or a 3-year Bachelor's plus a Master's, is the standard route into a German Master's.
German grades run from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (pass), and Indian CGPA or percentage is converted using the Modified Bavarian Formula. Use our German grade converter for an instant conversion from a 10-point CGPA or percentage.
Yes — most German PhDs are paid, either as a TV-L E13 research position (commonly a 50–100% contract, roughly €1,500–€3,000/month net depending on level) or a stipend such as the DAAD doctoral grant (≈€1,300/month). German PhDs are typically tuition-free, last 3–5 years, and do not require the APS for doctoral applications.
A student-visa holder can apply for family reunification (Familiennachzug) for a spouse and children. The spouse usually needs basic German (A1), and you must show sufficient income and living space. A dependent spouse on family reunification generally receives full work rights.
There are two intakes. The Winter semester (classes start October) is the main intake with the most programmes — deadlines run March to July 15. The Summer semester (classes start April) is smaller — deadlines September to January 15. Apply 6–8 months ahead to allow time for APS, IELTS, uni-assist, and the visa.
Public student health insurance (TK, AOK, Barmer, and similar) costs about €120–€140/month for students under 30. It is mandatory and required for both university enrolment and the student visa. Students over 30 pay more or use private plans.
For cost-conscious Indian students, Germany is usually the lowest-cost option: €0 tuition at public universities versus roughly ₹20–40 lakh per year in the USA, UK, Canada, or Australia. Germany also offers an 18-month post-study job-seeker visa and a clear EU Blue Card → permanent-residency path. The trade-off is that some programmes and most jobs expect German at B1–B2.
Yes. GradGermany is a private education consultancy based in Delhi, registered with the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (Udyam), Government of India. It offers a free profile evaluation and paid application-support packages, and is independent — not affiliated with DAAD, the German government, or any university.
Yes — 140 full days or 280 half days per year without a separate permit. Most Indian students earn €450–€700/month part-time (minimum wage is €13.90/hour in 2026). Werkstudent (working-student) roles in your field don't count against the 140/280-day cap if they are 20 hours per week or less during the semester.
About 59,419 Indian students were enrolled at German universities in 2024 — more than double the 2020 figure of 28,905 — making India the largest international student group in Germany. Germany overtook the UK for Indian Master's enrolments in 2023. (Source: DAAD Wissenschaft weltoffen 2025.)
