Hochschule Aalen - University of Applied Sciences (Technik, Wirtschaft und Gesundheit) is a public Fachhochschule located in Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1962 as the Staatliche Ingenieurschule Aalen, it has grown to approximately 4,000 enrolled students and around 60 degree programmes across five academic faculties. The university holds doctoral degree-awarding rights, granted in 2023.
The institution organises its teaching and research across five subject clusters: Economy and Management; Health and Natural Sciences; Engineering Sciences and Future Technologies; Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence; and Design and Communication. Programmes are offered at bachelor's and master's level, with several degrees available fully in English. What it costs
Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU/EEA international students a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester for standard bachelor's and master's degree programmes, in addition to the mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of approximately €180 per semester. EU/EEA students and German nationals are not charged this additional fee. Students pursuing a second degree pay an additional €650 per semester. The semester contribution covers student services (Studierendenwerk), public transport entitlement, and the student union. The figures cited (€1,500 + €180) are confirmed for Winter Semester 2026/27.
Admission requirements
International applicants must submit credentials through uni-assist, which issues a Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) required for the application portal. For English-taught bachelor's programmes, applicants must hold a recognised university entrance qualification and provide proof of aptitude via TestAS (≥100), SAT (≥1050), or ACT (≥20). For English-taught master's programmes, a completed 3-4 year university degree representing at least 15 years of total education is required. English language proficiency must be demonstrated by a certificate no older than two years (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72, TOEIC 785, Cambridge First Grade B, or PTE Academic B2 64, among others). Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants whose prior qualifications are from those countries must obtain an APS certificate before applying, as required by German consulates for the student visa. Credential recognition follows standard anabin/KMK procedures; all applicants should verify the anabin status of their home institution.
Application deadlines
English-taught bachelor's programmes: 15 March (extended to 15 June) for Winter Semester; 30 November for Summer Semester. German-taught bachelor's with NC: 15 July (Winter), 15 January (Summer). German-taught bachelor's without NC: first Friday after lectures begin (both semesters). Master's programmes (German-taught): 15 June (Winter), 15 December (Summer). How international applicants apply
uni-assist VPD procedure - applicants with international qualifications must first obtain a Vorpruefungsdokumentation (VPD) from uni-assist; only VPDs issued for Hochschule Aalen are accepted, and applicants from APS countries (India, China, Vietnam) need the APS certificate before applying for the VPD. With the VPD they apply directly in the university's own online application portal (NC bachelor programmes additionally via hochschulstart/DoSV).
Languages of instruction
The primary language of instruction is German. Eleven degree programmes are offered fully in English: three bachelor's degrees (Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Sales Engineering) and eight master's degrees (Advanced Materials & Manufacturing, Advanced Systems Design, Applied Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Marketing and Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Data Analytics, Polymer Technology, Health Technology Management). German-language programmes require TestDaF or DSH; English-language programmes require B2-level proof (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72, or equivalent). Supplementary German language courses are available through the Language Center (Sprachenzentrum).

Living in Aalen
Aalen is a mid-sized city of approximately 68,000 inhabitants in the Ostalbkreis district of eastern Baden-Württemberg, situated between Stuttgart and Ulm in the Swabian Alb region. The city has a strong industrial base in precision manufacturing and optics and offers a compact, affordable living environment compared to larger German cities.
