About Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Neu-Ulm

Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Neu-Ulm, HNU) was founded in 1994 and has grown to enrol around 4,400 students across three scientific departments: Business and Economics, Information Management, and Health Management. The university is a state-recognised Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) located in Neu-Ulm, Bavaria, and positions itself as an international business school for the Neu-Ulm/Ulm region.

HNU offers a notably large share of English-taught programmes by German Fachhochschule standards: around six Bachelor's and at least eight Master's programmes are delivered entirely in English, spanning applied cyber security, data science, artificial intelligence, digital health, digital innovation management, and international entrepreneurship. A Centre for Postgraduate and Professional Studies supports part-time and executive degree programmes aimed at working professionals.

The university holds system accreditation and additional programme-level accreditation (including AHPGS for health programmes). It maintains an active International Office that coordinates Erasmus+ partnerships, incoming and outgoing exchange, and limited scholarship support (Hochschule International fund, STIBET, DAAD Prize) for international degree-seeking students.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

HNU is a Bavarian public university of applied sciences. Bavaria introduced tuition fees for non-EU/non-EEA students from winter semester 2025/26 onwards; the amount under the Bayerisches Hochschulgesetz is €3,000 per semester for non-EU students. EU/EEA students and German students continue to study without programme tuition fees. All enrolled students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering student services; the exact current amount is not published on the official website pages reviewed — students should check the admissions portal or contact the Study Department for the current figure.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised university entrance qualification from their home country. For degree-seeking students applying from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), or Vietnam, the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate is mandatory before the German student visa can be issued — HNU itself does not issue or waive this requirement, but the German embassy will require it. Applicants whose school-leaving or bachelor's qualification is from a non-H+ institution on the anabin database may need to complete a Studienkolleg foundation year before direct Bachelor's admission. Language requirements vary by programme language track. English-taught programmes generally require IELTS or equivalent proof of English proficiency; German-taught programmes require proof of German proficiency (typically B2/C1 level via TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe certificate). Specific minimum scores per programme are not published in a single location on the official site — applicants should consult the programme page or contact the International Office directly. Applications are submitted via the campus.hnu.de portal.

Application deadlines

For incoming exchange students, the application deadline for winter semester 2026/27 is 1 May 2026, with the winter semester beginning in September. Deadlines for degree-seeking international applicants (Bachelor's and Master's) are managed through the campus.hnu.de application portal; specific cut-off dates are not published on the static website pages and should be confirmed directly with the Study Department or International Office.

Languages of instruction

German and English. Approximately six Bachelor's programmes are taught entirely in English (including Applied Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and Information Management, Data Science Management, Digital Health, Information Management Automotive, Smart Mobility Management). At least eight Master's programmes are fully English-taught (including Advanced Management, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Health Informatics, Digital Innovation Management, Digital Leadership in Information Management, Digital Transformation and Global Entrepreneurship, Strategic Information Management, Advanced Sales Management and Intelligence). Additional programmes are delivered in German or in bilingual format. A university Language Centre offers German as a Foreign Language alongside five other languages.

Campuses & locations

Main Campus Neu-Ulm

Wileystraße 1, 89231 Neu-Ulm — primary campus housing all three departments, International Office (Room A.1.12), library, mensa (Building A), and cafeteria (Building B)

Living in Bayern

Neu-Ulm is a city of approximately 60,000 inhabitants in Bavaria, situated directly on the Danube river opposite the larger city of Ulm (Baden-Württemberg). The twin-city agglomeration has a combined population of around 180,000 and offers a compact student-friendly environment with good rail connections to Munich (approx. 1.5 hours), Stuttgart, and Augsburg. Cost of living is lower than Munich or Frankfurt, making it an affordable location for international students.

Student life & support

The International Office (Main Building, Room A.1.12, tel. +49 731 9762-2121) provides dedicated support for incoming degree-seeking and exchange students, including an orientation programme and assistance with housing queries. HNU's Language Centre offers German as a Foreign Language courses, which is particularly relevant for students in English-taught programmes who wish to develop practical German for daily life. The university operates a mensa (Building A) and cafeteria (Building B) on the main campus. Student housing is not managed directly by HNU; the university directs students to external providers and Studentenwerk resources for accommodation. Limited scholarship support is available through the Hochschule International fund, STIBET graduation scholarship, and the DAAD Prize.
