About Evangelische Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften - Evan

The Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg (EVHN) — Lutheran University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg — is a state-recognised, church-sponsored university of applied sciences operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria (ELKB). Founded in 1927 as a social school for women, it was transformed into a Fachhochschule in 1971 and adopted its current name in 2010. It enrolls approximately 1,300 students and employs around 45–50 professors.

EVHN offers nine bachelor's and four master's programmes concentrated in social work, health and nursing, education, management, Diakonik (Christian social work), and religious education. The university describes its character as "open, discursive, scientific" with a strong values orientation that is open to students of all denominations and worldviews. Small study groups and close lecturer-student contact are central to its profile.

The institution is certified as a family-friendly university and participates in the "Weltoffene Hochschulen" (Open-minded Universities) initiative. Instruction is conducted almost exclusively in German, though an English-language study programme of up to 30 ECTS per semester is available each semester for incoming exchange and international students.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees for bachelor's programmes. Semester contribution to student services: €82 (as of winter semester 2026/27). Some non-consecutive master's programmes charge additional fees (e.g. Applied Educational Sciences: €550/semester). Note: As EVHN is a church-sponsored non-state university, the Bavaria-wide non-EU tuition fee introduced from WS 2025/26 for state universities does not automatically apply — confirm directly with EVHN for the latest fee status for non-EU students.

Admission requirements

International applicants must have their foreign school-leaving or bachelor's certificates assessed by uni-assist, which issues a Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) confirming equivalence to the Bavarian Abitur or German bachelor's. Applications are submitted via the PRIMUSS online portal. German language proficiency at B2 level is required to enrol in regular degree programmes. For bachelor's admission, applicants also need a 6-week practical internship in a social or healthcare setting completed by 30 September. Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants additionally require an APS certificate before applying for a student visa. An English-language semester programme (no full degree) is available for exchange students with lower German proficiency.

Application deadlines

Bachelor applications open 1 May annually; summer-semester Management programme opens 15 October. Specific closing deadlines vary by programme. International applicants should allow additional lead time for uni-assist VPD processing (typically 4–8 weeks). Contact the International Office for exact deadlines.

Languages of instruction

German (primary language of instruction for all regular bachelor's and master's programmes). English-language study programme (up to 30 ECTS/semester) available for exchange and international students each semester.

Campuses & locations

Living in Bayern

Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second-largest city, with a population of around 520,000. It combines a well-preserved medieval old town and castle with a modern metropolitan economy (home to Siemens, Adidas corporate offices, and a strong technology sector). The Gostenhof quarter, where EVHN is located, is a lively, culturally diverse neighbourhood close to the city centre. Cost of living is lower than Munich, and the Studentenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg provides student accommodation, dining, social, and cultural services.

Student life & support

EVHN's small size (around 1,300 students) fosters a community-oriented campus atmosphere with easy access to professors and staff. Student sports are offered through the university sports programme, with options including a range of group fitness and martial arts courses. The Studentenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg supports students with subsidised canteen meals, accommodation referrals, and counselling. The university runs regular practice-oriented events including Praxistage (industry networking days) and online information evenings for prospective students.
