About Technische Hochschule Augsburg

Technische Hochschule Augsburg (THA) is a public university of applied sciences located in Augsburg, Bavaria. It was officially established in 1971, though its institutional roots trace back to the Reichsstädtische Kunstakademie Augsburg founded in 1710. In July 2022, the Bavarian state government awarded THA the "Technical University" designation, reflecting its research achievements in technical disciplines; the name change took effect in 2023.

The university enrolls approximately 7,061 students (WS 2023/2024) across seven faculties and one school, offering 23 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree programmes. THA operates two campuses situated roughly 500 metres apart in central Augsburg: Brunnenlech Campus (engineering and science faculties, administration, library) and the Red Gate Campus (computer science, design, business). The institution employs 185 professors and 551 other academic staff.

THA is practice-oriented by design, with close ties to regional industry and companies in the Augsburg area. The International Office actively supports incoming international degree students through visa guidance, settlement assistance, scholarship advising, and the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI), which offers German-as-a-foreign-language courses and TestDaF/DAAD language certificates.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

THA charges no tuition fees for its standard bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes. A semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is charged each semester; the exact amount is set per semester and covers administrative costs and student services. Note: Bavaria introduced a non-EU student fee from Winter Semester 2025/26 — prospective students should verify the current fee amount directly with THA's student office before enrolling.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a university-entrance qualification recognised in Germany (anabin H+ or equivalent). Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam are required to obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate before applying. For German-taught programmes, a German language certificate at minimum B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe, or equivalent) is required; individual programmes may require C1. For the small number of English-taught programmes, an IELTS or equivalent English proficiency certificate is required — check individual programme pages for the exact band score. Applications are submitted via the university's applicant portal (HISinOne). Degree recognition is handled on a case-by-case basis for institutions without H+ anabin status.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (October start): 30 April – 15 July for most bachelor's programmes; 30 April – 30 June for most master's programmes (some master's close 15 April). Summer semester (April start): 15 November – 15 January for bachelor's; 15 November – 15 December for master's. Deadlines vary by programme type and admission restriction status — confirm on the official application page.

Languages of instruction

The large majority of the 75+ programmes are taught in German. A small number of programmes are offered bilingually (English/German), including: Digital Design and Production (BEng), Electrical Engineering (MEng), Environmental and Process Engineering (MEng), Industrial Safety and Security (MSc), and Interactive Media Systems (MA). The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI) provides German-as-a-foreign-language courses and preparation for TestDaF and DAAD language certificates.

Living in Bayern

Augsburg is a historic city in Bavaria, located approximately 70 km west of Munich. It is one of Germany's oldest cities, with Roman origins dating to 15 BC. The city has a population of around 300,000 and is a significant economic hub with a strong manufacturing and technology sector (aerospace, robotics, and IT companies). Augsburg is well connected by rail to Munich (under 30 minutes by regional express) and offers a relatively lower cost of living compared to Munich, with a lively cultural scene, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a large student community.

Student life & support

Student accommodation in Augsburg is managed through Augsburg Student Services (Studentenwerk Augsburg), which operates halls of residence (Wohnheime). Demand for university housing is high and places are allocated after admission; students are advised to apply promptly upon receiving their admission letter. Private shared apartments (WGs) are the most common alternative and are best sourced after arrival. The International Office provides settlement support, workshops, and events specifically for incoming international degree students. The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI) runs German-language courses for foreign students at multiple levels and issues TestDaF and DAAD language certificates. The university also offers a virtual German course for international students preparing before arrival.
