Living in Augsburg

Augsburg is a historic city in Bavaria, located approximately 70 km west of Munich. It is one of Germany's oldest cities, with Roman origins dating to 15 BC. The city has a population of around 300,000 and is a significant economic hub with a strong manufacturing and technology sector (aerospace, robotics, and IT companies). Augsburg is well connected by rail to Munich (under 30 minutes by regional express) and offers a relatively lower cost of living compared to Munich, with a lively cultural scene, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a large student community.

Student life & support

Student accommodation in Augsburg is managed through Augsburg Student Services (Studentenwerk Augsburg), which operates halls of residence (Wohnheime). Demand for university housing is high and places are allocated after admission; students are advised to apply promptly upon receiving their admission letter. Private shared apartments (WGs) are the most common alternative and are best sourced after arrival. The International Office provides settlement support, workshops, and events specifically for incoming international degree students. The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (ZSI) runs German-language courses for foreign students at multiple levels and issues TestDaF and DAAD language certificates. The university also offers a virtual German course for international students preparing before arrival.
