Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

As a public university in the state of Brandenburg, THB charges no tuition fees for any students regardless of nationality. Brandenburg state does not impose non-EU surcharges (unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria from WS 2025/26). Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) each semester covering administrative fees and student services; the exact current amount should be verified on the Kosten des Studiums page at th-brandenburg.de, as it is updated each semester.

Admission requirements

International applicants with foreign qualifications apply through uni-assist e.V. Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) before submitting their application. Most programmes at THB are currently admission-free (zulassungsfrei, no Numerus Clausus), meaning applicants who meet the entry qualification are not subject to a competitive selection cap. Language requirements vary by programme; German-taught programmes typically require TestDaF TDN 4, DSH 2, or equivalent. Applicants should verify programme-specific language and subject prerequisites directly with the admissions office or on the relevant programme page.

Application deadlines

THB directs applicants to its dedicated Fristen (deadlines) page for current semester-specific dates. International applicants using uni-assist should apply well ahead of the general enrolment deadline to allow processing time. As a general reference for German Fachhochschulen: winter semester (October start) deadlines via uni-assist typically fall in June–July; summer semester (April start) deadlines fall around December–January. Verify exact dates at th-brandenburg.de/studium/bewerbung-und-einschreibung/fristen/ before applying.

Languages of instruction

The primary language of instruction is German. The university maintains a Centre for International Affairs and Languages (Zentrum für Internationales und Sprachen, ZIS) which offers accompanying language courses including a dedicated DeutschPlus preparatory German course. Specific English-taught degree programmes are not enumerated on the main study-programme page; prospective international students should consult the ZIS portal (zis.th-brandenburg.de) or individual programme pages to confirm language of instruction.

Living in Brandenburg

Brandenburg an der Havel is one of the oldest cities in the Brandenburg state and serves as a regional centre approximately 60 km west of Berlin, with direct rail connections (approximately 40–50 minutes by regional train). The city lies on the Havel river and is known for its medieval old town, cathedral, and surrounding lakes. Its proximity to Berlin gives students access to a major metropolitan area while benefiting from significantly lower living costs than the capital.

Student life & support

The university's Centre for International Affairs and Languages (ZIS) provides support services for incoming international students covering pre-arrival guidance, integration, and study-accompanying language courses, including the DeutschPlus German course. Student housing is available through the local Studentenwerk (student services organisation), which manages affordable dormitory places in Brandenburg an der Havel. The university offers counselling services, sports facilities, and a student cafeteria on campus. International exchange students can also access outbound mobility programmes through partner universities coordinated by ZIS.
