Living in Köln

Cologne (Köln) is Germany's fourth-largest city with a population of approximately one million, located on the Rhine in Nordrhein-Westfalen. It is a major commercial, media, and cultural hub, home to the famous Cologne Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and has one of Germany's most internationally diverse student populations. The city is well connected by rail (high-speed links to Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, and Frankfurt) and has an international airport. Cost of living is moderate by German standards, and the city has a vibrant arts, music, and nightlife scene.

Student life & support

TH Köln's International Office (Referat für Internationale Angelegenheiten) provides dedicated support for international degree-seeking students, including guidance on visa procedures, accommodation search, and getting started in Cologne. The university runs a Language Learning Centre (Sprachlernzentrum) offering German courses for incoming international students. A buddy programme pairs new international students with experienced peers. Student accommodation is managed by Kölner Studierendenwerk, to which part of the semester contribution (€110/semester) is paid; early application for a dormitory place is strongly recommended. The semester contribution includes the Deutschlandticket, giving students unlimited travel on public transport across Germany for the duration of the semester.
