Tuition & fees

THWS is a public university of applied sciences in Bavaria. Most programmes carry no tuition fees beyond the statutory semester contribution. Note: Bavaria introduced tuition fees for non-EU/non-EEA international students from Winter Semester 2025/26 — prospective applicants should verify the current fee schedule directly with THWS, as amounts and programme-level exemptions may apply. Some advanced or online master's programmes are subject to programme-specific study fees. The semester contribution covers student services (Studentenwerk) including canteen access and public transport discounts; the exact amount should be confirmed at the time of enrolment via the THWS re-enrolment pages.

Admission requirements

International applicants whose qualifications were obtained abroad are generally required to submit a Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) issued by uni-assist e.V. as a mandatory part of the application. Applications are submitted via the THWS CampusPortal (campusportal.thws.de). Entry qualifications must be recognised as equivalent to a German Fachhochschulreife (advanced technical college certificate) or Abitur. Language entrance requirements vary by programme: German-taught programmes require proof of German language proficiency (typically B2/C1 level or equivalent); English-taught programmes require proof of English proficiency. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must additionally obtain an APS certificate from the relevant German embassy before applying. Architecture and Communication Design require a portfolio submission and qualification test. Specific language level requirements by programme are listed on the THWS website under Language entrance requirements by programme.

THWS spans two northern Bavarian cities: Würzburg and Schweinfurt. Würzburg (population ~130,000) is a historic university city on the Main river, known for its UNESCO World Heritage Residenz palace, Franconian wine culture, and lively student scene. Schweinfurt (population ~55,000) is an industrial and engineering city approximately 35 km east of Würzburg, with lower living costs and a more compact student environment. Both cities are well connected by regional rail; Würzburg has direct ICE high-speed rail links to Frankfurt (approx. 1 hour) and Munich (approx. 2 hours).

THWS operates an International Office with dedicated support for incoming international and degree-seeking students, contactable at [email protected]. The office provides guidance on visa and health insurance requirements, language courses, housing, and orientation. Student accommodation is managed through the Studentenwerk, which operates dormitories in both Würzburg and Schweinfurt; international students are advised to apply for housing early. The Campus for Language Proficiency offers German and other foreign language courses, including courses specifically designed for incoming international students. The university also runs the KomPass International programme for cross-cultural competency development. Social and extracurricular activities include student clubs, sports, and an active international student community.
