Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig) is one of Germany's oldest technical universities, founded in 1745 as the Collegium Carolinum. A founding member of the TU9 association of leading German technical universities, it is organised into six faculties covering engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, architecture, and humanities, with over 120 institutes and 15,051 enrolled students as of Winter Semester 2025/26.

Tuition & fees

TU Braunschweig is a public university in the state of Niedersachsen. There are no tuition fees for either EU or non-EU students for standard consecutive bachelor's and master's programmes. Students pay a semester contribution of €440.00 per semester (Summer Semester 2026 figure), which covers student services (€138), the student body contribution including the Deutschland-Semester-Ticket for public transport (€227), and an administrative costs contribution (€75). Admission requirements

International applicants apply through the university's online portal at connect.tu-braunschweig.de. Admission requirements vary by programme level and the applicant's country of prior qualification. For bachelor's programmes, a recognised school-leaving certificate (equivalent to the German Abitur) is required; applicants whose qualification is not directly recognised may need to attend a Studienkolleg. For master's programmes, a recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required. Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants must hold a valid APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) before applying — this is a consulate-issued academic credential verification and is mandatory for the student visa in addition to admission. German-taught programmes require proof of German language proficiency (typically DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4); English-taught programmes require proof of English proficiency (typically IELTS or TOEFL). Specific language thresholds are set at the programme level — applicants should verify requirements with the Incoming Office or on the individual programme page.

Application deadlines

Winter Semester (starts October): standard programmes 1 June – 15 July; dialogue-oriented programmes (e.g. Biology, Biotechnology, Psychology) 1 June – 15 October; international master's programmes 1 February – 15 March. Summer Semester (starts April): standard programmes 1 December – 15 January; dialogue-oriented programmes 1 December – 1 April; international master's programmes 1 August – 15 September. Pharmacy and certain programmes require prior registration at hochschulstart.de. Doctoral applications are accepted year-round.

Languages of instruction

The majority of degree programmes are taught in German (103 of 109 programmes). Eleven programmes are taught fully in English, primarily at master's level in STEM and engineering fields. German language courses are offered on-campus through the International House, including a 'Studying without Language Barriers' initiative and a tandem language exchange programme.

Living in Niedersachsen

Braunschweig (Brunswick) is a mid-sized city of approximately 250,000 inhabitants in Lower Saxony, located in the heart of the Hamburg–Hannover–Wolfsburg–Göttingen research triangle. The city hosts major employers including Volkswagen Group Research, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB, Germany's national metrology institute), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) — all of which maintain close ties with TU Braunschweig. The city has a compact, student-friendly centre with low living costs relative to Munich or Hamburg, and is well connected by rail to Hannover (30 min) and Berlin (90 min).

Student life & support

The International House at Universitätsplatz 2 is the central support point for international students and coordinates orientation events including a Welcome Week for new arrivals. A buddy programme pairs incoming international students with current students. German language courses at various levels are offered on campus. The student initiatives inTU and SCOUT provide peer networking and community building for international students. Housing support is available through the International House, though students are responsible for finding accommodation (the Studentenwerk operates halls of residence). The university also offers an International Career Service for guidance on working in Germany after graduation.
