About Universität Koblenz-Landau (jetzt: Universität Koblenz/RPTU)

The University of Koblenz is one of Germany's youngest universities, located on a single campus in the Metternich district of Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate. It is organised into four faculties: Educational Sciences, Philology / Cultural Studies, Mathematics / Natural Sciences, and Computer Science. The university describes its research profile around four interconnected areas: Education, Computer Science, Culture and Communication, and Materials and Environment.

Until 2022 the institution operated as Universität Koblenz-Landau with two campuses; following a split the Koblenz campus became the independent Universität Koblenz (also referred to in the context of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau). The Koblenz campus currently enrols approximately 9,700 students and offers Bachelor's, Master's, and distance-learning programmes, with both German-taught and English-taught options available.

International degree-seeking students apply through uni-assist and are supported by the International Relations Office, which coordinates incoming exchange and full-degree students, accommodation placement, and an International Mentoring Programme.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees are charged for a first degree (Bachelor's or first consecutive Master's). Students who have already completed a Master's degree at a German or other European university are charged €650 per semester. A semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is payable each semester; it covers partial administration costs, student union contributions, Studierendenwerk social services, and a semester ticket for local public transport in Koblenz. The exact semester contribution amount should be verified on the university's current fees page, as it is subject to annual revision. Rhineland-Palatinate does not impose the non-EU surcharge that Baden-Württemberg charges.

Admission requirements

International applicants with foreign qualifications typically apply through uni-assist before being processed by the university's own admissions office. A recognised university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) is required; individual programmes may additionally require language certificates, aptitude tests, or portfolio submissions. Applicants from India, China (mainland, HK, Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS certificate before enrolling in a German university. Application deadlines for international applicants may differ from domestic deadlines; the International Relations Office ([email protected]) should be contacted for programme-specific requirements.

Application deadlines

For Winter Semester (starting October): restricted-admission programmes 15 June – 15 July; unrestricted programmes 15 June – 30 September. For Summer Semester (starting April): restricted-admission programmes 15 December – 15 January; unrestricted programmes 15 December – 15 March. Different deadlines may apply to international applicants with foreign qualifications; the International Relations Office should be consulted.

Languages of instruction

The majority of programmes are taught in German. English-taught programmes are available, as are programmes taught in both German and English. The university's programme finder includes filters for 'Deutsch', 'Englisch', and 'Deutsch und Englisch' tracks. A language-proficiency certificate (e.g. DSH or TestDaF for German-taught programmes) is required; exact levels vary by programme.

Living in Rheinland-Pfalz

Koblenz is a city of approximately 115,000 inhabitants at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. It is a historically significant city known for the Deutsches Eck monument and the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Koblenz is well connected by rail to Cologne (approx. 1 hour) and Frankfurt (approx. 1.5 hours), making it attractive for students who value a mid-sized city environment with good transport links.

Student life & support

Student housing is managed by Studierendenwerk Koblenz, which offers 404 dormitory places in Koblenz (577 total including Remagen). Demand exceeds supply; only approximately 5% of students obtain a dormitory room. Single apartments are reserved for incoming international Master's students subject to availability, with a maximum rental period of six months. Private rooms in Koblenz average €350–€450 per month. The International Relations Office coordinates an International Mentoring Programme pairing new international students with experienced peers. The semester ticket included in the semester contribution covers local public transport. The Studierendenwerk also provides counselling, cafeteria services, and limited free legal advice.
