Living in Potsdam

Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and lies approximately 25 km south-west of Berlin, with direct S-Bahn and regional rail links to the city. The city is known for its UNESCO World Heritage palaces and parks, including Schloss Sanssouci, and features diverse historic quarters such as the Dutch Quarter and the Russian Colony Alexandrowka. Potsdam hosts a dense concentration of research institutions alongside the university, making it one of the stronger science locations in the greater Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Student life & support

The International Office ([email protected]) offers advising for incoming degree students and exchange students on academic matters, visa and residence permit processes, health insurance, housing registration, and employment regulations. A Buddy Programme pairs newly arriving international students with local student mentors. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) organises integration events. German language courses at multiple levels are provided through the Centre for Languages and Key Competencies. Student housing is managed by Studierendenwerk West:Brandenburg, which offers dormitory places at approximately €300-400 per month (furnished); demand exceeds supply, so early application is advised. Private furnished apartments in Potsdam start from around €550 per month.
