Germany Student Visa 2026: Steps, Cost, Documents and Time
TL;DR: You need a national type D visa from the German mission that covers your home state. The file wants an admission letter, EUR 11,904 in a blocked account, health insurance and, if your passport is Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Pakistani or Mongolian, an APS certificate. The fee is EUR 75, the wait is 6 to 12 weeks, and the right week to apply is the week your admission arrives.
The consulate is not assessing your ambition. It checks four things: that your admission is real, that anabin and the ZAB recognise your school-leaving certificate, that the APS has cleared your degree, and that your Sperrkonto holds this year's amount rather than last year's. Get one of those wrong and the file goes back into the queue for another six weeks. What follows is the 2026 process in the order you actually have to do it, starting with the money, because that is where most applications come apart.
What the whole thing costs
The visa fee is the cheapest line on the list. Proof of financing decides whether you board the plane.
| Item | 2026 amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked account | EUR 11,904 a year | Released at EUR 992 a month |
| Visa fee | EUR 75 | Non-refundable, paid in local currency |
| Health insurance | About EUR 140 a month | Statutory rate under 30 |
| APS certificate (India) | INR 18,000 | Separate process, run it months ahead |
| Semester contribution | EUR 150 to 390 | Per semester, usually with a transport pass |
| Baden-Wuerttemberg tuition | EUR 1,500 a semester | Non-EU students at Stuttgart, Heidelberg, KIT, Freiburg |
| Processing time | 6 to 12 weeks | Longer from June to August |
Only one state charges tuition. Everywhere outside Baden-Wuerttemberg, public universities take non-EU students for free, TU Munich, RWTH Aachen and TU Berlin included. The monthly side of that picture is in our breakdown of what a year of student life in Germany actually costs.
Do you need a visa at all
Indian, Nepali, Nigerian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese and Filipino passports need a national visa before departure, along with most other non-EU passports. A Schengen tourist visa is not a substitute and cannot be converted into a study permit once you are inside Germany. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need nothing. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean and Israeli nationals may fly in visa-free and apply for the residence permit after they land.
Three study visas, and the one people pick by mistake
| Visa type | Who it is for | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa Visum zu Studienzwecken | You hold an unconditional admission letter | Three to six months, then a residence permit |
| Applicant visa Studienbewerbervisum | You must sit an entrance test or Studienkolleg assessment in person | Three months, extendable to six in Germany |
| Language course visa Sprachkursvisum | Intensive German course, no university place attached | Course length; rarely switchable to a study permit |
The third row is the trap. A language course visa is no back door into a degree, and switching out of it inside Germany rarely works. If your German sits below the B2 level a German-taught programme expects, fix that before you book an appointment for anything else.
Proof of financing, and three accepted substitutes
Germany wants evidence that you can pay for a year without working. The standard instrument is a blocked account, or Sperrkonto: you deposit EUR 11,904, the bank freezes it, and it pays out EUR 992 a month once you arrive. The amount tracks the BAfoeG rate and moves most years, which is why the 2025 figure of EUR 11,208 now gets a certificate rejected on sight.
Deutsche Bank still runs the classic account. Expatrio, Fintiba and Coracle handle most student cases now, mainly because they issue the confirmation in days rather than weeks. We can open and verify the blocked account for you if you want the paperwork checked before it goes in. Three alternatives are accepted:
- A scholarship award letter. A DAAD, KAAD or Deutschlandstipendium confirmation replaces the deposit when the monthly amount matches EUR 992.
- A Verpflichtungserklaerung, signed by a German resident at their local foreigners' office, who has to prove their own income to sign it.
- A bank guarantee from a German bank, which some missions take in place of the deposit.
Parental bank statements on their own are not proof of financing at most missions, however large the balance.
The documents your mission will ask for
Every mission publishes its own checklist, so download your consulate's PDF and work down it line by line. The core set barely changes:
- Passport with two blank pages, valid past your intended stay, plus data-page copies
- The national visa form, printed and signed, usually in duplicate
- Two recent biometric photographs to German specification
- Admission letter, or a conditional letter plus proof of the Studienkolleg place
- Blocked account confirmation, scholarship letter or declaration of commitment
- Proof of the health insurance German universities accept, covering travel and the start of the semester
- Degree certificates, transcripts and Class 10 and 12 marksheets, with certified translations
- Language proof: IELTS or TOEFL, or TestDaF, DSH or Goethe for German-taught degrees
- An APS certificate, and how Indian applicants get one, required for India, China, Vietnam, Pakistan and Mongolia
- Motivation letter, CV and the visa fee receipt
Bring originals and two photocopy sets. The mission keeps the copies and hands the originals back, though not always on the same day.
The order to do it in
- Clear the APS first. In India it runs separately from university applications, costs INR 18,000, and blocks everything downstream until it is done.
- Apply to universities through the university's own portal or through uni-assist, which screens your documents first. Common deadlines are 15 July for October and 15 January for April, and plenty of programmes set earlier ones.
- Get the admission letter. A conditional offer is not enough unless the condition is a Studienkolleg place or an entrance test, in which case you switch to the applicant visa.
- Open the blocked account and transfer the full amount. Allow time for the wire to clear and for the confirmation to issue on top of that.
- Buy health insurance starting on your travel date. Public student cover only begins at enrolment, so most students buy travel cover for the gap.
- Book the appointment. In India, submission runs through VFS Global in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, at the office covering your state of residence.
- Submit and give biometrics. Expect questions about your programme and your funding. A student who cannot name the city their university is in reads badly.
- Wait. Some files are decided at the consulate. Others go to the foreigners' office of your German city for consent, and that is what stretches the wait.
How long the wait runs, and when to book
Six to twelve weeks is the honest range. June to August is the crush.
| Intake | Admission arrives | Appointment to aim for | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter, October start | April | Early May | Comfortable |
| Winter, October start | Late June | Early July | Tight but workable |
| Winter, October start | August | Any slot you can get | Ask for a deferral |
| Summer, April start | November | Early December | Comfortable |
| Summer, April start | January | Early February | Fine outside peak |
If the dates stop adding up, ask the university to defer. Most will move an admission by one semester if you ask before enrolment closes. None of them will hold a place for a student who simply fails to turn up.
Your first weeks in Germany
Your visa carries a printed validity window, and you cannot enter before it opens, usually a few weeks ahead of the semester. Inside your first two weeks you register your address at the Buergeramt. That Anmeldung certificate is the first thing the bank, the mobile provider and the foreigners' office will ask for, which is why a room with a registration-friendly landlord in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or Stuttgart beats a cheaper one without. When the search stalls, we help with finding a room and a landlord who will register you.
Then comes the student residence permit, usually issued for two years and renewed against your academic progress. It carries the work rights: 140 full days or 280 half days a year at a minimum wage of EUR 13.90 an hour. A Werkstudent job inside that limit tops the blocked account back up, and our guide to how the 140-day rule is counted covers the arithmetic, which is less obvious than it sounds.
On graduation the permit converts into an 18-month job-seeker permit, and a qualifying offer turns that into an EU Blue Card at EUR 45,934 for shortage occupations or EUR 50,700 otherwise. That 18-month job-seeker route into a Blue Card is the reason a lot of students choose Germany over cheaper options.
Six mistakes that get files refused
- Last year's blocked account figure. Deposit the current amount or the file fails on arithmetic alone.
- Applying without admission. If all you hold is an entrance exam invitation, apply for the applicant visa instead of hoping the officer improvises.
- Missing APS. India, China, Vietnam, Pakistan and Mongolia need it. Bangladesh does not.
- Names that do not match. Different spellings across your passport and your degree certificate need an affidavit, arranged before the appointment.
- Insurance that starts too late. Cover runs from your entry date, not from the first day of the semester.
- Booking one appointment and stopping. Slots open in waves. Check the portal daily instead of settling for a date months out.
Each one costs weeks to unwind. Treat the first attempt as the only one you get.
