Finding Student Accommodation in Germany: Dorms, WGs and How to Avoid the Crunch (2026)
TL;DR: The main options are student dormitories (cheapest, via Studentenwerk), shared flats (WGs) at roughly €300 to €500/month, and private studios at €700 to €950/month in big cities. Demand is intense in 2026, especially in Munich, Berlin, and Frankfurt, so apply for housing the day you receive your admission letter and never pay before seeing a place.

Ask any student in Germany what stressed them most before arriving, and housing is near the top of the list. The good news: with an early start and the right approach, it is very manageable. Here is how the market works in 2026.

Why housing is competitive right now

Germany's surging popularity, low tuition, and strong job prospects have pushed up demand for student housing, especially in big cities. Dormitories have limited spaces and long waitlists, and private rentals in Munich, Berlin, and Frankfurt are pricey. The single biggest lever you control is timing: start early.

Your main options

Student dormitories (Studentenwohnheim). Run by the Studentenwerk, these are the cheapest and most convenient option, which is exactly why they fill fast. Apply the moment you have your offer.

Shared flats (WG / Wohngemeinschaft). The most popular choice among students: you share a flat with 2 to 4 others and split rent and utilities, typically €300 to €500/month depending on city and location. WGs are also a great way to make friends quickly.

Private studios or one-bedroom flats. Maximum privacy, higher cost: €700 to €950/month in big cities, plus utilities and a deposit (Kaution) of one to three months' rent upfront.

Temporary housing. For your first weeks, book short-term accommodation so you are not searching from abroad under pressure. You can then view places in person.

How to find a place

  1. Apply for a Studentenwerk dormitory immediately after your offer.
  2. Search reputable WG and rental platforms for your city.
  3. Prepare a tidy application pack (Bewerbungsmappe) to stand out.
  4. Connect with the Indian and international student community for leads.
  5. Line up temporary housing for arrival, then view places before signing.

City costs vary enormously

Where you study changes the rent dramatically. Munich and Frankfurt run high; Leipzig, Dresden, and Magdeburg are far cheaper. For a full breakdown, see Cost of Living in Germany for Indian Students and Best German Cities for Indian Students in Volume 2.

The golden safety rule

Never transfer money before you have seen the flat (in person or via a verified viewing) and signed a contract. Housing scams target international students specifically; we cover the red flags in Avoiding Rental & Admission Scams.

Don't forget the Anmeldung

Once you have a place, you must register your address (the Anmeldung) and get a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). This is the gateway to your residence permit and bank account, so it matters; see The Anmeldung.
