Summer Semester 2027 in Germany: Why Your Real Deadline Is Six Weeks Before 15 January

Every year a set of applicants discovers the summer intake in November, decides it is the fast route into Germany, and misses it. Not because they were late to the university deadline. Because they were late to everything that comes before the university deadline.

Here is the actual timeline, working backwards from April 2027.

So far, so comfortable. Then reality intervenes.

Indian applicants have a two-step gate that European applicants do not.

APS certification. The Academic Evaluation Centre certificate has been mandatory for Indian applicants since 2022, for every intake and every level. No APS certificate means no valid application and no visa appointment. Processing is not instantaneous and it is at its slowest exactly when everyone is applying. uni-assist. Many universities route international applications through uni-assist, which checks and converts your documents before the university ever sees them. Uni-assist works to its own clock. Submit on the last day and your application can reach the university after the deadline has closed, which counts as late. Details in our uni-assist guide.

Stack those two and the honest working deadline for a 15 January university cut-off is late November to early December 2026. That is the date to write down.

The thing nobody tells you about summer intake

Summer is the smaller intake, and "smaller" understates it for the courses most Indian applicants want.

Most engineering, computer science and STEM master's programmes at the large public research universities, including TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and KIT, do not admit international students for the summer semester. A university can list a summer intake in its general information and still run only a handful of its programmes in that cycle.

If your course does run in summer, the smaller applicant pool is a genuine advantage. If it does not, no amount of preparation changes that, and you should be building a winter semester 2027/28 application instead.

Working backwards: your actual calendar

• August to September 2026: shortlist programmes and confirm each one runs a summer intake. Start APS if you have not already.
• September 2026: language certificate booked and sat. IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught courses, or a German certificate if the course is taught in German.
• October 2026: APS certificate in hand. Letters of recommendation collected.
• November 2026: submit to uni-assist. This is the real deadline.
• December 2026 to January 2027: direct submissions for universities that do not use uni-assist.
• February to March 2027: admission letters, blocked account, visa appointment.
• April 2027: semester starts.

Notice how little slack there is between the admission letter and the semester start. Visa appointment waits at Indian consulates are the second most common reason summer applicants defer, after simply missing the queue in November.

Summer or winter: which should you target

Winter has more programmes, more seats, more scholarship cycles aligned to it and a much larger incoming cohort, which matters more than students expect for making friends and finding housemates. Summer has less competition and gets you started six months sooner.

If your course exists in both and you are ready now, take summer. If you are rushing your language certificate or your APS to make it, take winter and use the extra six months to submit a stronger application. A deferred application beats a rejected one.
