RWTH Aachen for Indian Students: Costs, Requirements and the Honest Version of Getting In

RWTH Aachen is probably the single most searched German university among Indian engineering applicants, and for good reason. It is one of the nine members of TU9, and it sits at the Dutch and Belgian borders with strong industry links. A degree there costs a fraction of the US or UK equivalent.

It is also the university where I see the most unrealistic applications. So here is what RWTH itself publishes, rather than what aggregator sites estimate.

What it costs, per RWTH

There is no tuition fee for most bachelor's and master's programmes. What you pay is the semester contribution, which RWTH describes as covering student activity dues, a mobility fee and a social services contribution. The mobility component alone, the Deutschlandticket that gets you on regional transport across the whole country, is 208.80 euros per semester from winter semester 2025/26.

On living costs, RWTH's own costs page for international students says to budget at least 1,100 euros per month:

Notice that RWTH's own minimum, 1,100 euros, is higher than the 992 euros a month the blocked account is built on. The university is telling you the visa minimum is tight in Aachen. Believe it.

The money the visa office wants

RWTH confirms the standard figures: a blocked account of 11,904 euros per year, and a minimum monthly income of 992 euros to extend your residence permit later. Full mechanics in our blocked account guide and the student visa guide.

One planning note that costs students real money: the blocked account releases one twelfth per month. It does not release a deposit for a flat. Aachen landlords commonly want two to three months' rent as a Kaution up front, and that has to come from somewhere else.

Admission requirements for Indian applicants

Three things are non-negotiable before RWTH will look at you seriously.

APS certificate. Mandatory for Indian applicants, for every level and every intake. Start it early, because it gates everything downstream. See the APS guide.

dMAT, if your field is covered. The newer aptitude test applies to a defined list of bachelor's fields, and most engineering branches are on it. Check whether yours is in our dMAT affected fields list before anything else, because it changes your timeline by months.

Language proof. English-taught master's need IELTS or TOEFL. German-taught programmes need C1-level proof, which in practice means TestDaF TDN 4, DSH-2 or telc C1 Hochschule. RWTH runs plenty of English-taught master's, but the bachelor's programmes are overwhelmingly in German.

On grades, RWTH converts your Indian marks into the German scale, where 1.0 is best and 4.0 is the pass mark. Competitive applications to restricted master's programmes sit well under 2.5. Our grading system guide explains the conversion.

Deadlines, and the trap in them

RWTH publishes deadlines per programme, and they genuinely differ between restricted and open-admission courses, and between winter and summer intakes. Do not take a date from a consultancy blog, this one included. Open your exact programme's page on the RWTH site and read the date there.

What is universally true: if your application routes through uni-assist, add roughly six weeks to your personal deadline for document checking. Combined with APS, that is the six-week rule we cover in the summer semester 2027 deadline guide.

One current thing worth knowing

RWTH is one of ten NRW universities whose senates formally warned in October 2025 about a reduction in state funding of around 150 million euros a year from 2026. It does not change tuition or your degree's value, but it is real context for class sizes and campus hiring. We covered it in the budget cuts explainer.

Should you apply?

Apply, but do not build your plan around it. RWTH should be one of eight to ten applications, sitting alongside universities in Ilmenau, Magdeburg, Darmstadt, Braunschweig and Dresden that teach engineering to a similar standard with a fraction of the applicant pressure and cheaper rent.

The students who end up disappointed are not the ones RWTH rejected. They are the ones who applied to RWTH, TU Munich and TU Berlin, and nothing else.
