TU Berlin: How to Apply via Uni-assist, English Programs & Living Costs

The single thing that costs people a TU Berlin place is starting uni-assist too late. The steps have a fixed order and each one waits on the last, so the whole line stalls if you begin the VPD a few weeks before the programme deadline. TU Berlin says so itself: international applicants keep the same deadlines as everyone else, but must have a VPD in hand, and processing can take several weeks.

The order the paperwork has to happen in

1. Collect transcripts and your degree certificate.
2. Get them verified, and get the APS if your country needs one.
3. Upload everything to uni-assist and pay.
4. Wait for the VPD to come back.
5. Submit the programme application before its own deadline.

Write those five steps down with a target date against each. That is the whole trick. Nobody misses a TU Berlin deadline because they forgot to apply; they miss it because step four was still in progress. Note that step three ends when your payment arrives, not when you upload the last file, so a transfer sent without the right reference can add a week nobody budgeted for.

The deadline is not the one you think it is

Applicants write "July 15" in the calendar and stop reading. At TU Berlin that date belongs to restricted-admission bachelor's programmes, and the master's dates sit well in front of it. Here is the winter semester 2026/27 cycle as the university published it.

Read that first row again. If you are an international applicant targeting an English-taught master's, your real deadline is two months earlier than the national date, and the VPD has to be finished before it. uni-assist and what it costs

Most international applicants send their documents to uni-assist, which checks eligibility and issues the VPD, the statement of how your degree compares to a German one. It charges EUR 75 for the first course of study you select in a semester and EUR 30 for each one after that, at the same rates whether you are making a full application or requesting only a VPD.

The VPD is not the APS

People conflate these constantly. The VPD grades your degree against the German system and comes from uni-assist. The APS certificate verifies that your documents are genuine and comes from the German embassy's academic evaluation centre, and applicants from India, China, Vietnam and Mongolia need it regardless of the VPD. You will often need both, and their queues run in parallel rather than one after the other, so start them in the same week. What is taught in English

A lot of it. TU Berlin runs more than 150 degree programmes in all, of which over 70 are master's, and a substantial share of the master's catalogue in engineering and computer science is taught in English, alongside a few English bachelor's. Requirements and deadlines are set per programme, so the programme page is the only reliable source, and as the table above shows, the teaching language changes the date. What a year costs

Tuition is zero. The semester fee is not, and TU Berlin publishes the breakdown line by line. For winter semester 2026/27 it comes to EUR 379.06.

The semester ticket is the part that pays for itself. It is the Deutschland-Semesterticket, valid on local public transport nationwide, at EUR 226.80 for six months, so EUR 37.80 a month. The same Deutschlandticket bought as a normal subscription costs EUR 63 a month, which makes the student version worth about EUR 25 a month, or a little over EUR 150 across the semester. Enrolment buys it whether you use it or not, so use it.

Living in Berlin runs 900 to 1,200 euros a month, and rent is most of it. The Moses Mendelssohn Institut put the average Berlin student room at 650 euros a month for summer semester 2026, against a national average of 512. Statutory student health insurance adds 141.16 euros a month under 23 and 146.29 from 23 without children. The visa also needs 11,904 euros sitting in a blocked account, releasing 992 euros a month. Working during and after the degree

Section 16b of the Residence Act lets you work 140 full days or 280 half days a calendar year, counting anything up to four hours as a half day. Student assistant work at your own university is exempt from that count, and TU Berlin is a large employer of its own students. Berlin's startup and tech employers hire in English, which makes it one of the easier German cities to find student work without fluent German.

After graduation, section 20 gives you up to 18 months to look for work, provided you can support yourself. Then it gets better than most people expect: once you are employed as a skilled worker, the settlement permit normally takes three years, but studying in Germany cuts that to two years with 24 months of pension contributions. How far English gets you in Berlin

Further than anywhere else in Germany. You can study, work in tech and get through daily life in English here.
