Frequently Asked Questions About Studying in Germany After B.Tech
Yes. Indian B.Tech degrees (4-year) from AICTE/UGC-recognized institutions are fully accepted by German universities. You can apply directly to Master's programmes in your field — whether it's Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or any other branch.
Yes. The anabin database (maintained by the German government) confirms recognition of Indian engineering degrees from recognized universities. A 4-year B.Tech is equivalent to a German Bachelor's degree and qualifies you for Master's admission at all German universities.
Most German universities expect a GPA equivalent to 65–70% or above from Indian institutions. Top programmes at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, or TU Berlin may require 75%+. Use the modified Bavarian formula to convert your Indian percentage to the German grading scale (1.0–4.0).
Most German universities do NOT require GRE for engineering Master's programmes. Some private universities and a few competitive public programmes may ask for GRE or GATE scores, but it is generally not mandatory. This is a major advantage over applying to the US.
English-taught programmes typically require IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL 80–90. German-taught programmes require TestDaF (TDN 4) or DSH-2. Many technical programmes at top universities like TU Munich, KIT, and RWTH Aachen are available fully in English.
Public universities charge zero tuition. Budget approximately €11,208 per year for living costs (the blocked account requirement for your student visa). The semester fee is only €150–€350. Total cost is significantly lower than the US, UK, or Australia — making Germany one of the most affordable destinations for Indian engineers.
Excellent. Germany faces a shortage of 400,000+ engineers. The 18-month post-study work visa makes it easy to transition from student to professional. Many Indian graduates work at top companies like BMW, Siemens, Bosch, SAP, Continental, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz. Germany's Industry 4.0 initiative ensures strong demand for engineers across all disciplines.
