Living in Göttingen

Göttingen is a mid-sized university city of approximately 120,000 residents in the state of Niedersachsen, southern Lower Saxony. With around 31,000 students it has one of the highest student-to-resident ratios in Germany, giving it a distinctly young and international atmosphere. The city is recognised as a "City of Science" and is home not only to the university but also to a dense cluster of Max Planck Institutes and other research institutions. Göttingen lies on the intercity rail corridor between Frankfurt and Hanover, with fast-train connections to both within one hour.

Student life & support

The International Office (located at Von-Siebold-Straße 2, 37075 Göttingen) coordinates support for incoming international students, including a buddy/pick-up service, welcome activities, housing assistance, visa and registration guidance, and health insurance orientation. The university has dedicated India and China advisors within the International Office. The Studierendenwerk Göttingen manages approximately 4,500 student housing spaces across halls of residence and shared apartments; the Mahatma-Gandhi-House offers accommodation specifically for international students. Early application for housing is strongly recommended as demand peaks in April and October. German language courses are available through the university's German language lectorate and the Institute for Intercultural Communication (IIK Göttingen). The Foyer International supports cross-cultural exchange. University sports facilities (Hochschulsport) offer a wide range of activities. The semester ticket included in the Semesterbeitrag covers regional public transport across Lower Saxony.
