International applicants must hold a higher-education entrance qualification recognised by the German KMK (anabin database). For programmes with restricted admission (Numerus Clausus), the application period runs 1 June to 15 July for the winter semester; open-admission programmes allow enrolment from 1 June to 30 September. Language requirements vary by programme: German-taught programmes require a recognised German-language certificate (TestDaF TDN 4, DSH 2, or Goethe C1/C2); English-taught programmes require English proficiency proof (IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent). Non-EU applicants require a student visa and health insurance before enrolment; measles vaccination proof is also required at matriculation. For undergraduate programmes (bachelor/state examination), non-EU/EEA applicants apply entirely online through the university's own application and upload portal ('the application procedure for undergraduate programmes is conducted solely by the University of Göttingen and takes place completely online'); the university checks foreign university entrance qualifications itself against anabin/Central Office for Foreign Education guidelines and charges its own one-off EUR 65 evaluation fee per application semester instead of uni-assist handling fees. Applicants whose qualifications fall short are automatically routed to the Studienkolleg Hannover entrance examination. Master's admissions are conducted faculty-by-faculty through separate programme portals with programme-specific deadlines, so no university-wide uni-assist procedure is documented.

The primary language of instruction is German. However, the university explicitly states that more than 50 Master's and PhD programmes are fully taught in English. English-taught Master's examples include Applied Computer Sciences, Development Economics, International Economics, Molecular Medicine, Neurosciences, Forest and Ecosystem Sciences, and Crop Protection. A small number of English-taught Bachelor's programmes also exist (e.g. Ecosystem Sciences B.Sc., Intercultural Theology B.A.). Some programmes in the humanities require German proficiency at B2 or C1 level even if partly taught in English. German-language instruction programmes require TestDaF TDN 4, DSH 2, or equivalent.
