Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

As a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia, HHU charges no tuition fees for first-degree and consecutive master's programmes for any student regardless of nationality (NRW does not levy a non-EU surcharge, unlike Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg). All enrolled students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) each semester, which covers the student union (AStA), social fund, and a Semesterticket for public transport in the VRR network. The exact semester contribution amount should be verified on the HHU enrolment pages at the time of application as it is updated each semester.

Admission requirements

International applicants from non-EU countries apply under a dedicated 'Application as a foreign student' procedure managed by the Student Services Centre (SSC). Entry qualifications are assessed for equivalency to the German Hochschulreife (university entrance qualification); applicants whose school-leaving certificate does not directly qualify for admission may need to attend a Studienkolleg or complete additional preparatory studies. Indian, Chinese (mainland, Hong Kong, Macau), and Vietnamese applicants are required to hold a valid APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate before the university will process their application. For master's programmes, a recognised bachelor's degree in a relevant subject is required; the anabin database of the KMK is used to assess foreign qualifications. Language of instruction requirements must be met: German-taught programmes require DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 (all four components); English-taught programmes require proof of English proficiency (IELTS or equivalent). Applications are submitted via the HHU application portal; uni-assist is used for document verification for most non-EU applicants.

Application deadlines

Specific deadline dates are managed through the HHU application portal and vary by programme type (locally restricted / NC-free / medicine) and applicant group. As a general reference for NRW universities: Winter Semester (October start) applications for non-EU students typically close in mid-July; Summer Semester (April start) applications typically close in January. Applicants must verify exact deadlines for their specific programme on the HHU portal, as some programmes are not available in the summer semester.

Languages of instruction

The primary language of instruction is German. HHU offers a number of English-taught degree programmes at both bachelor's and master's level; the university's official site lists a dedicated section for English-taught study programmes (see source URLs). Students in German-taught programmes typically need at least DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 per faculty requirements. German language courses and tandem exchange programmes are available on campus through the GetConnected@HHU initiative.

Campuses & locations

Main Campus Düsseldorf-Bilk

Single unified campus of approximately 130 hectares in the Bilk district of southeast Düsseldorf, housing all five faculties, the University and State Library (ULB), and the university's Botanical Garden.

Living in Nordrhein-Westfalen

Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and one of Germany's major economic and cultural centres, with a population of approximately 650,000. It is known for its fashion industry, international trade fairs (Messe Düsseldorf), a strong Japanese expatriate community, and a vibrant arts scene along the Rhine. The city is well-connected by air (Düsseldorf Airport, the third-busiest in Germany), rail (intercity and high-speed links), and the VRR metropolitan transit network. The cost of living is moderate by German standards; student housing through the Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf is available in several residential areas within commuting distance of the campus.

Student life & support

The Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf manages student housing, canteens, and social counselling services. The HHU International Office coordinates orientation programmes for incoming international students, including 'New at HHU' and 'New in Germany' guides, a language tandem programme, the STIBET Completion of Studies Grant for international students in financial difficulty, and events through the GetConnected@HHU initiative. German language courses at various proficiency levels are offered on campus. The university's Botanical Garden and a range of student clubs and cultural activities contribute to campus life. An advisory service for refugees and a dedicated buddy programme are also available.
