About Hochschule Flensburg

Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Flensburg) is a public university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in Schleswig-Holstein, tracing its roots to the Royal Danish School for Navigation founded in 1852. It is a compact, teaching-led institution with approximately 3,500 students and a distinctively low student-to-professor ratio — fewer than 50 students per professor compared to the German average of 64.

The university organises its programmes across four faculties covering mechanical engineering and maritime technologies, energy and life sciences, information and communication, and business. It offers around 19 bachelor's and a range of master's programmes, with notable strengths in maritime transport and nautical sciences, energy engineering, sustainable energy systems, and biotechnology. It hosts the largest ship bridge simulator facility in Northern Europe.

Hochschule Flensburg shares a campus with Europa-Universität Flensburg and is embedded in a cross-border German-Danish academic region. The institution maintains partner universities on five continents and participates in Erasmus+ exchange. Its applied-sciences orientation means faculty typically bring industry experience and teaching integrates real laboratory and simulation work.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees are charged. Students pay a semester contribution of approximately €392 per semester (winter semester 2026/27 figure), covering the Studentenwerk contribution (€89), AStA student committee fee (€16.20), Schleswig-Holstein semester transport ticket (€226.80), and an administration fee (€60). A one-time enrolment fee of €80 applies. Schleswig-Holstein does not charge additional non-EU student fees, so the semester contribution is the same for all students regardless of nationality.

International applicants (non-German) apply via uni-assist. Required documents include a certified copy of the higher education entrance qualification (with German or English translation), a CV with photograph, and a certified English language proficiency certificate. Bachelor's applicants must hold a recognised school-leaving qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung); master's applicants must submit their bachelor's or Diplom degree certificate. The university strongly recommends applying 3–6 weeks before the official deadline.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (start September): preferred deadline 15 May, final deadline 1 July. Summer semester (start March): preferred deadline 15 November prior year, final deadline 1 January. Living in Schleswig-Holstein

Flensburg is a harbour city of approximately 90,000 inhabitants on the German-Danish border in Schleswig-Holstein. It offers an affordable cost of living with rents below the German average and accommodation that is easier to find than in larger university cities. The city has a distinctive maritime character with a historic inner harbour, sailing and water-sports opportunities, and a cross-border cultural identity shaped by German and Danish heritage.

Student life & support

The university runs orientation weeks (TOPWochen) at the start of each semester to help new students settle in. Student life includes campus cinema, parties, and the annual Kohl and Pinkel tour. Hochschule Flensburg participates in the DAAD-FIT programme, which provides international students with advisory support, coaching, and help finding internships and jobs. The International Office organises additional events and support for incoming students. Accommodation is available through the Studentenwerk and is generally accessible compared to larger German cities.
