About Hochschule Flensburg
Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Flensburg) is a public university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in Schleswig-Holstein, tracing its roots to the Royal Danish School for Navigation founded in 1852. It is a compact, teaching-led institution with approximately 3,500 students and a distinctively low student-to-professor ratio - fewer than 50 students per professor compared to the German average of 64.
The university organises its programmes across four faculties covering mechanical engineering and maritime technologies, energy and life sciences, information and communication, and business. Admissions & fees
What it costs
No tuition fees are charged. Students pay a semester contribution of approximately €392 per semester (winter semester 2026/27 figure), covering the Studentenwerk contribution (€89), AStA student committee fee (€16.20), Schleswig-Holstein semester transport ticket (€226.80), and an administration fee (€60). A one-time enrolment fee of €80 applies. Schleswig-Holstein does not charge additional non-EU student fees, so the semester contribution is the same for all students regardless of nationality.
Admission requirements
International applicants (non-German) apply via uni-assist. Required documents include a certified copy of the higher education entrance qualification (with German or English translation), a CV with photograph, and a certified English language proficiency certificate. Applicants to German-taught programmes must additionally provide proof of German language skills. Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must submit an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate as part of their uni-assist application. Bachelor's applicants must hold a recognised school-leaving qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung); master's applicants must submit their bachelor's or Diplom degree certificate. The university strongly recommends applying 3-6 weeks before the official deadline.
Application deadlines
Winter semester (start September): preferred deadline 15 May, final deadline 1 July. Summer semester (start March): preferred deadline 15 November prior year, final deadline 1 January. These apply to uni-assist applications for international students. Domestic applicants use HISinOne with deadlines of 15 July (winter) and 15 January (summer).
How international applicants apply
Full processing via uni-assist - every applicant from outside Germany applying for a complete degree programme must submit via uni-assist (deadlines 1 July WS / 1 January SS); applicants with German qualifications apply directly via the HISinOne portal.
Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German. A number of master's programmes are available in English. International applicants to German-taught programmes must demonstrate German language proficiency; English language certification is required from all international applicants via uni-assist.
