HM operates across three campuses in Munich: the main Campus Lothstraße (engineering, design, administration), Campus Pasing (business and social sciences), and Campus Karlstraße in the museum district (architecture, civil engineering, geoinformatics). The university employs 500 professors, 675 staff members and researchers, and approximately 750 part-time lecturers.

For international students, the majority of Bachelor's programmes are taught in German; English-taught Master's options are available in fields such as Photonics, Micro- and Nanotechnology, Paper Technology, Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation, and Business Administration: Digital Technology Management. Over 100 individual lectures and seminars per semester are also offered in English across all departments through the Courses in English (CiE) programme.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

Bavaria introduced tuition fees for non-EU/EEA international students from WS2025/26. At HM, non-EU students pay €500 per semester for Bachelor's programmes and €700 per semester for Master's programmes. All students (including EU) additionally pay a mandatory Studierendenwerk (student services) contribution of €97 per semester. Most consecutive Bachelor's and Master's programmes at HM are otherwise tuition-free for EU/EEA students and German residents. Estimated monthly living costs in Munich are €975–€1,350 (accommodation €450–€800, insurance ~€125, food ~€250, other ~€100). Student dormitory waiting times are typically 3–4 semesters; early application to Studentenwerk München is strongly recommended.

Admission requirements

International applicants to Bachelor's programmes must have their foreign school certificates assessed by uni-assist (for most nationalities) or the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) for applicants from India, China, and Vietnam — the APS assessment is an alternative to uni-assist for these nationalities and takes approximately 6–8 weeks. Applicants receive a VPD (preliminary documentation) which is then submitted with the online application to HM. All Bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require a certified German language certificate at B2 or C1 level; enrolment without proof of German language proficiency is not possible. For Master's programmes, applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree of at least 6 semesters with 180 ECTS and a good academic grade. Some Master's programmes require relevant work experience or departmental entrance tests. Five Master's programmes are taught in English. Applicants from India, China, or Vietnam applying to certain Master's programmes also require APS verification.

Application deadlines

Bachelor's programmes: Winter Semester — 2 May to 31 July (Design and Architecture: deadline 15 June, portfolio by 31 May); Summer Semester — 15 November to 15 January. Master's programmes: Winter Semester — 2 May to 15 June (restricted-access programmes: to 15 July; Business Administration: to 31 May); Summer Semester — 15 November to 15 January. Exchange students: nomination deadline Winter Semester 1 May, application 15 May; Summer Semester nomination 1 November, application 15 November.

Languages of instruction

The majority of Bachelor's and Master's programmes are taught in German, requiring B2 or C1 proficiency at enrolment. English-taught Master's programmes include Photonics, Micro- and Nanotechnology, Paper Technology, Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation, and Business Administration: Digital Technology Management. In addition, over 100 individual courses per semester across all 14 faculties are offered in English through the Courses in English (CiE) elective programme.

Living in Bayern

Munich (München) is the capital of Bavaria and Germany's third-largest city, with approximately 1.5 million residents. It is one of Europe's major economic and technology hubs, home to the headquarters of BMW, Siemens, MAN, and Allianz, as well as a thriving startup ecosystem. The city is consistently ranked among the highest quality-of-life cities in the world. Students benefit from excellent public transport (the S-Bahn/U-Bahn network covers all three HM campuses), proximity to the Alps, and a rich cultural scene. Munich is, however, the most expensive city in Germany for accommodation, and international students should plan housing arrangements well in advance.

Student life & support

HM's International Office ([email protected]) coordinates services for incoming students including orientation programmes, the HoMe peer mentoring programme (connecting new international students with experienced HM students), and support for refugees and migrants. The university provides access to university sports facilities and the International Club. German language courses are available through the university to support integration. For housing, students are advised to apply early to Studentenwerk München dormitories (typical wait 3–4 semesters) and consult private platforms such as stuwo.de, studenten-wg.de, and mitwohnzentrale.de. A monthly public transport student ticket covers the entire Munich network at approximately €43/month.
