About Hochschule für Musik "Carl Maria von Weber" Dresden
Hochschule für Musik "Carl Maria von Weber" Dresden (HfM Dresden) is one of Germany's leading music conservatories, offering bachelor's, master's, and state examination programmes in instrumental performance, vocal studies, composition, conducting, jazz/rock/pop, music theory, and music education. The university sits at Wettiner Platz 13 in central Dresden, combining a historic building with a purpose-built modern facility housing concert halls, ensemble rooms, a recording studio, a voice research studio described as globally unique, and the Hybrid Music Lab.
The institution brings together around 1,200 students and staff from more than 60 countries, taught by faculty that includes international soloists and orchestral musicians from world-class ensembles. Its proximity to Dresden's Semperoper, Staatsoperette, and Philharmonie gives students direct access to professional performance environments and internship pathways.
Alongside the conservatory, HfM Dresden operates the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium für Musik (State Grammar School for Music), a state-funded boarding school for musically gifted pupils from year 5 through year 11 whose teaching is delivered by conservatory professors and musicians from Dresden's leading orchestras.

Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
Tuition fees apply to non-EU citizens who do not hold a German higher education qualification or a German permanent residence permit, and to students pursuing a second degree (fee schedule governed by §5 of the university's fee regulations, German-language document). All students pay a semester fee each semester, which includes the Dresden semester ticket. An application processing fee is charged to all applicants. Saxony does not impose the Baden-Württemberg-style general non-EU surcharge, but individual programme tuition fees for the categories above apply — exact amounts should be confirmed directly with the university.
Admission requirements
Admission is based on artistic entrance examinations (Aufnahmeprüfung) specific to each instrument, voice, composition, or pedagogy specialisation — there is no age limit. Bachelor's and state examination programmes start in the winter semester only; master's and Meisterklasse programmes may have summer-semester entry. Non-EU applicants without a German higher education qualification and without a German permanent residence permit are subject to tuition fees in addition to the standard semester fee. APS certificate requirements follow standard German rules: mandatory for applicants whose prior qualification is from India, China, or Vietnam. Language requirements vary by programme; applicants should consult the relevant programme page or contact the Student Secretariat.
Application deadlines
Winter Semester 2026/27: application period 1–31 March 2026; entrance exams 1–12 June 2026. Summer Semester 2027 (master's/Meisterklasse only): application period 1 October – 1 November 2026; exams January 2027. Bachelor's and state examination courses can only begin in the winter semester.
Languages of instruction
German is the primary language of instruction. Individual programmes and requirements vary by specialisation; international applicants should confirm language requirements directly with the relevant faculty.

Living in Sachsen
Dresden is a city of music and students in Saxony, eastern Germany. The conservatory is located between the vibrant Neustadt district — known for its international cafes and nightlife — and the historic Altstadt with its world-famous museums, the Frauenkirche, the Semperoper, and the Zwinger. The city's dense concentration of professional orchestras and opera companies makes it an exceptionally practical location for music students seeking professional exposure and part-time performance work.
Student life & support
The on-campus cafeteria "Stimmgabel" serves as the main social hub, offering affordable meals and hosting regular informal concerts that have become a conservatory tradition. Students have access to numerous individual practice rooms, ensemble rehearsal stages, a modern recording studio, and the Hybrid Music Lab for electronic and experimental music projects. Dresden's cultural calendar — including the Semperoper season, the Dresden Music Festival, and chamber music series — provides a constant stream of professional performance opportunities beyond the university.
