Hochschule Mittweida – University of Applied Sciences is a public institution in the town of Mittweida, Saxony, founded in 1867 as the "Technikum Mittweida". It is one of the oldest and largest universities of applied sciences in Saxony, offering more than 50 degree programmes across five faculties spanning engineering, computer sciences, industrial engineering, social sciences, and media.
The university has an explicitly international character: approximately 21 percent of its nearly 7,000 students come from abroad, and the institution maintains partnerships with over 100 universities worldwide. Alumni exceed 80,000 graduates from more than 40 countries.
As a Fachhochschule (HAW), Hochschule Mittweida combines academic education with strong applied and industry-oriented training. It holds doctorate rights in physics and laser technology, and operates specialised research centres in laser applications and sensor technology.

Tuition-free for all bachelor's programmes and consecutive master's programmes at this public Saxony institution. No non-EU surcharge (Saxony does not levy the Baden-Württemberg-style non-EU fee). Students pay a semester contribution of €107 per semester (€92 Studentenwerk + €15 Studentenschaft). Fee-based programmes exist only for non-consecutive master's and distance-learning courses.
Admission requirements
International applicants apply directly through the university's online portal (HISinOne). Most programmes are admission-open (no NC); restricted programmes such as Media Management and Social Work require prior registration via hochschulstart.de and an administrative fee of €250. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must submit an APS Certificate (original) as a mandatory document. Entry qualification accepted: Abitur, Fachhochschulreife, or equivalent recognised foreign secondary school leaving certificate; for master's programmes, a first academic degree with transcript is required. Language: German-taught programmes require DSH-2 or TestDaF 4×TDN4 (or equivalents such as Goethe C2, Telc C1 Hochschule, DSD II). English-taught programmes accept IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 76, B2 First 173, UNIcert II, or Duolingo 110; applicants who completed their prior degree in English may submit a Medium of Instruction letter instead.
Application deadlines
Winter Semester (October start): 15 April – 15 July (missing documents accepted until 20 July). Summer Semester (April start): 15 October – 15 January (missing documents accepted until 20 January). Note: nearly all bachelor's programmes begin in winter semester only; Social Work and select master's programmes also admit in summer semester.

Most bachelor's and master's programmes are taught in German; a growing number of master's programmes are available in English. German-taught programmes require at minimum DSH-2 or TestDaF 4×TDN4. English-taught programmes require IELTS Academic 6.0 / TOEFL iBT 76+ / B2 First 173+ / Duolingo 110+.

Mittweida is a small university town in central Saxony, situated between Chemnitz and Leipzig. The compact campus and town centre are fully walkable, making it one of Germany's most affordable student locations — dormitory rooms cost approximately €200/month compared to €400–€600 in major German cities. The surrounding region offers easy rail connections to Chemnitz (30 min) and Dresden (1 hr).
Student life & support
The university's own description characterises Mittweida as a focused, relaxed college-town environment where students can walk to all facilities without public transport. On-campus dormitory housing is managed through Studentenwerk Freiberg; applications must be submitted by 30 June (winter) or 1 January (summer). Monthly living costs are estimated at around €632, including dormitory (~€210), food (~€300), health insurance (~€105), and the broadcast fee (~€17.50).
