About Popakademie Baden-Württemberg

Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, located in Mannheim, is Germany's only public university dedicated to pop music and the creative industries. Founded in 2003, it operates as both a higher education institution and a national competence centre for pop culture, music business, and the creative economy. All degree programmes are accredited through ACQUIN.

The academy offers five programmes across two departments — Popular Music and Music & Creative Industries — spanning bachelor's and master's levels. The curriculum emphasises practical training: bachelor's students complete two mandatory 12-week industry internships, and the institution runs its own in-house artist agency (KLINKT). In 2014, Mannheim was designated a UNESCO City of Music, with Popakademie named as a central pillar of that recognition.

The academy maintains 28 international partnerships across 17 countries and actively supports student mobility through Erasmus+ and Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM funding. With roughly 100–120 applications received per programme annually and cohort sizes of 12–30 students, admission is selective and based on both an entrance exam and practical portfolio.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees for first-degree (consecutive) programmes for EU/EEA students. Since winter semester 2017/18, Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU international students €1,500 per semester for state universities; this applies to Popakademie. Second-degree students are also subject to tuition fees regardless of nationality. The student union contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is €85 per semester for all students.

Admission requirements

All programmes require a German university entrance qualification (Abitur or equivalent). International applicants whose prior qualification is from India, China, or Vietnam must hold an APS certificate before applying. German language proficiency is mandatory for all programmes: C1 for B.A. Pop Music Design and B.A. Music Business (accepted certificates: DSH, Goethe-Institut diplomas, Studienkolleg FSP); B2 for B.A. Global Music, M.A. Popular Music, and M.A. Music & Creative Industries. Admission is not based on a numerus clausus but on a competitive entrance examination and practical portfolio (audio/video recordings, CV, relevant experience). International applicants must also present a valid visa or residence permit by the programme start. Enrolment is possible for the winter semester only.

Application deadlines

Annual deadline: 30 April (applications open from 5 February). For 2026 the Global Music B.A. deadline was extended to 31 May. Entrance examinations typically held in late June (e.g. 25–28 June 2026 for Pop Music Design). Winter semester intake only — no summer semester enrolment.

Languages of instruction

All programmes taught in German. Bachelor's in Pop Music Design and Music Business require C1 German; Global Music B.A. and both master's programmes require at least B2 German.
