About Schiller International University Heidelberg

Schiller International University (SIU) is a private American-accredited university with four international campuses in Heidelberg (Germany), Madrid, Paris, and Tampa (USA). Founded in 1964 and describing itself as "the First American Multicampus University in Europe," it holds accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCSC) for both U.S. and European programmes. The university reports more than 20,000 alumni and draws students from over 130 nationalities.

The Heidelberg campus is located at Zollhofgarten 1, 69115 Heidelberg. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees in business, international relations and diplomacy, STEM fields, and sustainability. All programmes are taught in English, and students may transfer between SIU campuses without interrupting their studies. The university partners with UNITAR for select graduate programmes in diplomacy and sustainability.

As a private institution, SIU charges tuition fees at European campuses of approximately €15,420 per year for bachelor's programmes and €16,500–€20,700 for master's programmes depending on duration. It is not a state-recognised German university (Staatlich anerkannte Hochschule) in the traditional sense; prospective students should verify degree recognition for their target country before enrolling.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

SIU is a private fee-charging institution — there is no tuition-free option. At the Heidelberg campus, bachelor's programmes cost approximately €15,420 per year (€514 per credit). Master's programmes cost €16,500–€16,560 per year for 12-month tracks, or €20,700 for the 15-month MBA in International Business. A deposit of 50% of first-year (undergraduate) or total programme (graduate) fees is due before enrolment. Scholarships of up to 50% of tuition are advertised as available on a merit and need basis. Baden-Württemberg's non-EU tuition surcharge (€1,500/semester, applicable at state public universities) does not apply here as SIU is a private institution with its own fee schedule. Payments are accepted by bank transfer, credit card, or Flywire.

Admission requirements

For undergraduate admission, applicants must hold an officially recognised secondary school leaving certificate (e.g. Indian Class XII / CBSE / state board, German Abitur, IB Diploma, A-levels, or equivalent). No minimum percentage is published; the university reviews academic records individually. English proficiency is required: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 51, Duolingo 95, or Cambridge FCE Grade B at undergraduate level. For master's admission, an undergraduate degree (or recognised equivalent) is required; foreign degree holders must arrange a credential evaluation through AACRAO, AICE, or a NACES member. Graduate English thresholds are IELTS 6.0 (6.5 for MBA), TOEFL iBT 67, or Duolingo 105. The APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) is not mentioned in SIU's own admissions documentation, however Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants applying for a German student visa are still subject to the APS requirement imposed by the German Embassy — applicants from these countries should obtain their APS certificate before applying for the visa regardless of SIU's internal admission requirements. The application is submitted online at apply.schiller.edu and involves a five-step process: online form, conditional offer letter, document submission, academic interview, and final offer. A non-refundable application fee applies.

Languages of instruction

All campus-based programmes at Heidelberg are taught entirely in English. No German-language programmes are offered. An English proficiency waiver is available for applicants whose prior schooling was conducted in English.

Living in Baden-Württemberg

Heidelberg is a historic university city in Baden-Württemberg on the Neckar river, home to Germany's oldest university (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, founded 1386). The city has a population of roughly 160,000, of whom approximately 39% are under 30, reflecting its strong student character. Heidelberg has a growing technology and life-sciences cluster, with BASF, SAP, and numerous biotech firms in the wider Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area. Public transport (tram, bus, regional rail) is well developed, and the city is served by Frankfurt Airport approximately 80 km away.

Student life & support

The Heidelberg campus provides on-campus student accommodation through the Campus Viva dormitory, offering modern studios of 21–25 m² with built-in kitchen, ensuite bathroom, gym access, and laundry facilities. Housing enquiries are handled by Monika Weuster at [email protected]. Student life is organised around a Student Council (STUCO) that arranges cultural excursions, sports participation (including the Heidelberg Marathon), and social events such as the annual Spring Ball. The university offers visa assistance for Germany. Career and internship support is available through a dedicated on-campus centre. Intercampus mobility to Madrid, Paris, or Tampa is built into the programme structure. Specific German language course provision on-campus is not detailed on the official site; students are advised to contact the Heidelberg campus directly.
