About Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm

Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (THN), commonly called the Ohm, is one of the largest universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in Germany, with approximately 12,481 students enrolled across 13 faculties in winter semester 2025/26. The university traces its institutional roots to 1823 with the founding of the Städtische Polytechnikum in Nuremberg; it is named after physicist Georg Simon Ohm, who taught and served as rector there between 1833 and 1849.

The Ohm offers practically oriented bachelor's and master's degree programmes across engineering, computer science, business, design, health, social sciences, and natural sciences. A dedicated Ohm International School coordinates English-taught international degree programmes and pathway courses, making THN accessible to students without German language skills. The university maintains more than 160 international partnerships and enrolled students from 110 nations in WS 2025/26.

THN's research profile spans seven thematic areas including Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, Energy and Resources, Mobility and Logistics, and Health. It hosts several Fraunhofer research groups and participates in the Nuremberg Campus of Technology (NCT) collaborative, giving students access to applied research environments alongside coursework.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

Students from non-EEA countries (without a German secondary school leaving certificate or prior German bachelor's degree) who enrol from winter semester 2025/26 onward are charged tuition fees of €1,000 per semester under Bavaria's non-EU fee regime. All students additionally pay the mandatory Studierendenwerkbeitrag (student services contribution) each semester, the amount of which is not specified on the public website but covers access to student services. EU/EEA students are not subject to the non-EU tuition fee.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). Foreign credentials are assessed individually during the online application via the anabin and DAAD databases. For German-taught programmes, a minimum of B2 German proficiency is required; accepted certificates are listed in an official PDF on the university's orientation page. Language certificates may be submitted upon enrolment at the latest. For English-taught programmes, language requirements are set by each individual programme. Master's admission typically requires a bachelor's degree equivalent. A two-semester pathway programme (Studienkolleg-equivalent) is available for STEM applicants who need additional preparation. APS certificate requirements for Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants are not explicitly stated on the THN website; applicants from these countries should confirm with the German embassy/consulate and the International Academic Services team.

Application deadlines

Bachelor's programmes (winter semester): online application portal opens 2 May; NC-restricted programmes deadline 15 July. Bachelor's programmes (summer semester): applications open from 15 November (limited programmes, e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Design). Master's programme deadlines vary by programme — applicants should check individual programme pages. International applicants should also account for visa processing time when planning their application.

Languages of instruction

The majority of degree programmes are taught in German. The Ohm International School offers nine internationally oriented programmes taught primarily in English, including bachelor's programmes in International Business (B.A.) and International Business and Technology (B.Eng.), and master's programmes in International Finance and Economics (M.Sc.), International Marketing (M.A.), Business Administration for Professionals (MBA), Design for Digital Futures (M.A.), Intelligent & Autonomous Systems (M.Eng., from summer 2026), and Computational Mechanical Engineering (M.Sc.). A Language Center provides German-language courses and administers the DSH examination for university admission.

Living in Bayern

Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second-largest city, with a population of around 530,000, located in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. It is a major economic hub for engineering, manufacturing, IT, and logistics industries, home to companies such as Siemens, Schaeffler, and DATEV. The city has a well-developed public transport network (U-Bahn, tram, S-Bahn) and a relatively affordable cost of living by German standards; the university estimates a monthly budget of €900–1,100 for international students covering rent, food, insurance, transport, and leisure.

Student life & support

The Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg manages student housing and operates a free private room finder service for shared flats and private rentals in Nuremberg and Erlangen. The International Academic Services team ([email protected]) provides personalised housing advice. An orientation programme runs each September before the winter semester, and a StudyStart Moodle course helps new international students navigate German university life and administrative procedures. The Language Center offers German courses and DSH exam preparation. Statutory health insurance for students costs approximately €130/month. The university also offers sports facilities, on-campus catering, and various student initiatives.
