Living in Nürnberg

Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second-largest city, with a population of around 530,000, located in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. It is a major economic hub for engineering, manufacturing, IT, and logistics industries, home to companies such as Siemens, Schaeffler, and DATEV. The city has a well-developed public transport network (U-Bahn, tram, S-Bahn) and a relatively affordable cost of living by German standards; the university estimates a monthly budget of €900-1,100 for international students covering rent, food, insurance, transport, and leisure.

Student life & support

The Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg manages student housing and operates a free private room finder service for shared flats and private rentals in Nuremberg and Erlangen. The International Academic Services team ([email protected]) provides personalised housing advice. An orientation programme runs each September before the winter semester, and a StudyStart Moodle course helps new international students navigate German university life and administrative procedures. The Language Center offers German courses and DSH exam preparation. Statutory health insurance for students costs approximately €130/month. The university also offers sports facilities, on-campus catering, and various student initiatives.
