Is the Germany Student Visa Easy or Hard to Get? Reality Check 2026

The honest answer is that the German student visa is not hard to get and is easy to get wrong. Roughly 85-90% of complete applications succeed, which means about 1 in 8-10 are refused or sent back for more paperwork. Almost all of that failure is self-inflicted: an incomplete file, a blocked account that was not fully funded, or a form that contradicts another form.

What the approval rate hides

That headline percentage is an average across every embassy and every nationality, and it moves. Refusal rates differ by country, by the season you apply in, and by how stretched your particular consulate is that month. So treat 85-90% as a description of well-prepared applicants rather than a promise made to you personally. The full sequence is set out in the German student visa process step by step.

What actually decides it

• Document completeness. Missing paperwork, usually blocked account proof or the admission letter, is the leading refusal reason by a wide margin.
• Document form. The Indian missions require originals or copies certified by a German authority. Certifications by Indian authorities or notaries are not accepted, and attestation or apostille is not recognised for visa purposes at all.
• When you apply. The rush before the winter semester loads every embassy at once, and refusal rates rise with the queue.
• Where you apply. For a national visa you must use the mission responsible for the state or district where you live. The relaxation that lets Schengen applicants use any centre does not apply.
• Financial proof. The blocked account has to be properly opened and fully deposited, not partially funded and promised.
• Language evidence. Whatever English or German level your programme requires, documented with a recognised certificate.

The three documents that get student files refused

The German missions in India are unusually direct about this in their own FAQ, and all three cases are avoidable.

First, medium-of-instruction and exemption letters. The missions say do not provide them, that the visa section will not consider them, and that an application may be refused if you fail to cooperate by supplying a real certificate. A university's confirmation only counts if that university individually tested your language skills and is confirming your case specifically. Many Indian applicants send an MOI letter because a university accepted one at admission; the visa section is a separate authority and does not.

Second, the affidavit of support. It is not accepted in place of a blocked account or an official German sponsorship declaration. It is an additional document, not an alternative one. An education loan is likewise additional to the blocked account rather than a substitute.

Third, tuition. Where your university charges fees, the first two semesters have to be paid before the visa is issued, because the mission has to be satisfied you can finance a year. If you are holding an offer from a fee-charging university and have budgeted for the blocked account only, you have a gap.

How to stack the odds

• Submit 2-3 months before you intend to arrive, not when the deadline forces you.
• Complete the file before you book the appointment, rather than filling gaps afterwards.
• Buy health insurance that starts on the day you actually want to travel. The mission checks that cover exists on the visa's start date, and a policy beginning later pushes the visa's start date to match.
• Deposit the full blocked account amount and keep both the certificate and the transfer receipt.
• Make every form agree with every other form, down to the spelling of your name and your dates. If your name has changed, the Indian missions want the newspaper notices or the Gazette of India publication as proof.

Book the appointment in the right order, and the right category

At the Indian missions most national visas, the study category included, now begin in the Consular Services Portal. Where the portal covers your visa type, using it is compulsory, and the link to book an on-site appointment only appears once you have completed the application and its pre-check. People who book an appointment first and upload nothing are turned away at the counter.

The category you pick is equally load-bearing. The booking system is automated, you cannot change the category of a booked appointment, and if the purpose of your stay changes you have to cancel and rebook from the back of the queue. A booking whose category does not match your intended stay is invalid.

Refused and delayed are not the same thing

Plenty of applications that feel refused are simply still being processed. The missions warn that a national visa may take several months depending on category, that there is no way to track an application online, and that they will not answer status enquiries in the first three months after filing, because answering them lengthens processing for everyone. Early appointments are granted only in extreme medical or humanitarian situations, with proof.

So the useful discipline is not chasing, it is record-keeping. Keep a dated record of every submission and every email, because if you ever need to reapply, that record is your case. How long the wait itself should take is covered in current student visa processing times.

If the answer really is no, remonstration is gone

This is the part where most advice online is out of date. The Federal Foreign Office decided to abolish the remonstration procedure for visa rejections worldwide, and in India it has been abolished since 1 January 2024. Rejection letters issued since then state only one legal remedy: filing a lawsuit at the administrative court in Berlin, which then re-assesses the application.

In practice that leaves two routes, and the first is the one that works. You may reapply at any time, which is what most successful second attempts do, once the reason given in the refusal letter has actually been fixed. Or you go to court, which is slow, costs money and will not rescue a semester start. Read your refusal letter carefully: it names the ground you have to answer, and a reapplication that does not address it will fail the same way.

Treat it as a project, not a form

The applicants who struggle are not usually the weakest ones. They are the ones who left it late and then had to think clearly under a deadline. Build a timeline with real dates on it: documents gathered, blocked account deposited, tuition instalment paid, insurance dated to your flight, CSP application completed, appointment booked, biometrics done, decision expected. Show it to someone who will ask you about it. Most avoidable errors in this process are scheduling errors wearing a paperwork costume.
