About Technische Universität Clausthal
Technische Universität Clausthal (TU Clausthal) is a public research university located in Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). Founded in 1775 as the Clausthal Mining School, it has been a full technical university since 1968. The university is thematically positioned around the circular economy, with research and teaching organised along the themes of Energy, Materials, and Information.
With approximately 3,000 enrolled students, of whom around 50% come from more than 100 countries, TU Clausthal describes itself as one of the most international universities in Germany. The university is structured into two faculties and 28 institutes, supported by six interdisciplinary scientific research centres including CUTEC (environmental technology) and the Energy Storage Technology Centre (EST).
TU Clausthal operates three locations: the main campus in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, an Energy Campus in Goslar, and a Drilling Simulator Celle facility in Celle. The university offers 18 bachelor's and 19 master's degree programmes across engineering, natural sciences, computer science, and economics, with the circular economy running as a thematic thread through the full programme portfolio.

Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
No tuition fees for bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes — Niedersachsen does not charge tuition for international students at public universities. The mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is €242 per semester, comprising a student union fee of €150, an administration fee of €75, and a student body fee of €17. A long-term study surcharge of €500 per semester applies once the standard credit allowance is exhausted. Non-EU students pay the same semester contribution; no additional non-EU surcharge applies (unlike Baden-Württemberg).
Admission requirements
For bachelor's programmes, a university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) — such as an Abitur equivalent — is sufficient. For master's programmes, a completed bachelor's degree in a relevant subject is required; specific conditions apply per programme. International applicants whose qualifications were not obtained in Germany are subject to special regulations and should consult the Clausthal International Center (IZC) for credential recognition guidance. The IZC Application Team handles all international applications (contact: [email protected]). Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam who require an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate must obtain it before applying; TU Clausthal itself does not publish APS guidance on its main pages, so applicants should confirm requirements with the IZC or the relevant German embassy. Language requirements vary by programme and language of instruction; the IZC Language Center provides preparatory German courses.
Application deadlines
Summer Semester 2026: bachelor's deadline 15 April 2026; master's deadline 1 April 2026 (application portal opened 12 December 2025). Winter Semester 2026/27: applications expected to open from end of May 2026 (exact deadline not yet published at time of research). Applicants should check the official application portal for updated deadlines each cycle.
Languages of instruction
The majority of programmes are taught in German. An increasing number of master's programmes are available in English, including programmes in areas such as computer science, energy systems, and materials engineering. The Language Center (part of the Clausthal International Center, IZC) offers German courses at multiple levels for international students, as well as technical English and intercultural competence training. Prospective students should check individual programme pages at studiengaenge.tu-clausthal.de for the language of instruction.
