Admissions & fees

What it costs

Hamburg is a German state university and charges no tuition fees for the standard study period in Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, regardless of nationality. A semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is payable each semester; the exact current amount is not published on the pages retrieved and should be confirmed directly with TUHH's admissions office or the Studierendenwerk Hamburg.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised university-entrance qualification. A recognised Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, from an institution with adequate anabin standing) is required for Master's admission. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must obtain an APS certificate from the respective German Embassy before applying - the APS requirement is explicitly stated in TUHH's official application guidelines. English-taught programmes require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (TOEFL, Cambridge English, TELC, and UNICERT Online are also accepted); German-taught programmes require TestDaF or DSH. Applications are submitted via the university's online portal at tune.tuhh.de.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (starting October): deadline 15 July for all Bachelor's and German-language Master's programmes, and for selected English-language Master's programmes. For international English-taught Master's in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering the application window for Winter 2026/27 runs 1 June - 15 July; for most other international programmes the pre-check and online application open 1 December and close 1 February (approximately five months before the semester start). Summer semester (starting April): Computer Science and Electrical Engineering programmes accept applications 1 December - 15 January.

How international applicants apply

Not used. All applications run directly through TUHH's own applicant portal (TUNE): applicants with an international entrance qualification upload their documents themselves (school certificate with grades, university entrance exam proof if any, APS certificate for China/India/Vietnam, sworn translations, optional TestAS) and communicate with TUHH exclusively via TUNE; bachelor admission offers are issued exclusively via hochschulstart.de (DoSV). No uni-assist or VPD process is documented on any application page (bachelor or master), and TUHH is not on the uni-assist member list.

Languages of instruction

Most Bachelor's programmes and many Master's programmes are taught in German (requiring TestDaF or DSH proficiency). One Bachelor's programme (Engineering Science) and 14 Master's programmes are available entirely in English. Two joint European Master's degrees and an MBA (via the Northern Institute of Technology Management, NIT) are also on offer. TUHH also provides German language courses and language-café activities on campus to support international students.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
