International applicants whose school or university qualification was obtained outside Germany must have their educational credentials and language certificates verified before admission - even for programmes without a numerus clausus. The university uses the CAMPUSonline portal for all applications; postal or email submissions are not accepted. For bachelor's programmes, applicants whose secondary qualification does not directly qualify them for German university study (check the KMK anabin database) may be directed to the Studienkolleg München, which handles preparatory studies for all Bavarian universities. Applicants to the Studienkolleg must hold at least B2 German and should submit by 15 June (for winter semester) or 15 December (for summer semester) to allow time for entrance exam and visa. For master's admission, applicants typically require a relevant first degree and meet the language requirements of the individual programme. Applicants from India, China (PRC, HK, Macau), and Vietnam are required by the German visa authorities to hold an APS certificate before a student visa can be issued; the university itself does not list APS as part of its own admission procedure, but the APS is a visa pre-condition for those nationalities. Most bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes are taught in German. A growing number of master's programmes are delivered in English, particularly in STEM fields and African studies (BIGSAS graduate school). German-taught programmes require at minimum B2 German proficiency (DSH-1, TestDaF minimum 14 pts / no component below TDN 3, Goethe B2, or equivalent). English-taught programmes require B2 English (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 60, or equivalent) plus A1 German to be demonstrated by the end of the second semester.
