About Universität Bayreuth
The University of Bayreuth (Universität Bayreuth) is a public research university located in Bayreuth, Bavaria, founded in 1975. It operates seven faculties and enrols approximately 12,000 students, hosting researchers and students from over 100 countries. The university is known for its compact single-campus layout, which facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration across the natural sciences, economics, law, humanities, and cultural studies.
Bayreuth has a strong international research profile anchored by the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence (funded under Germany's Excellence Initiative), the Bayreuth Humboldt Centre for International Excellence, and a gateway office in Shanghai. It secures substantial third-party funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the European Research Council (ERC), and the Elite Network Bavaria. Subject-level CHE rankings place it among leading German universities in Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Sciences.
The university offers bachelor's, master's, teacher-training, and doctoral programmes. A number of master's programmes are delivered in English, particularly in STEM and African studies. Applications for degree programmes are submitted digitally through the CAMPUSonline portal; all supporting documents must be received by the stated deadline.

Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
The University of Bayreuth charges no programme tuition fees for students enrolled in state-funded (public) bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes. All enrolled students pay a standard semester contribution of €172.00 (WS 2026/27), comprising a student services fee of €87.00 and a public transport semester ticket of €85.00. The semester ticket covers public transportation within Bayreuth. Note: Bavaria introduced tuition fees of €3,000 per semester for non-EU international students from WS 2025/26 at some Bavarian state universities — applicants should verify the current fee status directly with the university's student administration office before enrolment, as the official semester fees page consulted (WS 2026/27) listed only the €172.00 standard contribution with no mention of a separate non-EU surcharge.
Admission requirements
International applicants whose school or university qualification was obtained outside Germany must have their educational credentials and language certificates verified before admission — even for programmes without a numerus clausus. The university uses the CAMPUSonline portal for all applications; postal or email submissions are not accepted. For bachelor's programmes, applicants whose secondary qualification does not directly qualify them for German university study (check the KMK anabin database) may be directed to the Studienkolleg München, which handles preparatory studies for all Bavarian universities. Applicants to the Studienkolleg must hold at least B2 German and should submit by 15 June (for winter semester) or 15 December (for summer semester) to allow time for entrance exam and visa. For master's admission, applicants typically require a relevant first degree and meet the language requirements of the individual programme. Applicants from India, China (PRC, HK, Macau), and Vietnam are required by the German visa authorities to hold an APS certificate before a student visa can be issued; the university itself does not list APS as part of its own admission procedure, but the APS is a visa pre-condition for those nationalities. Non-EU applicants with foreign qualifications must in most cases submit a preliminary review document (VPD) via uni-assist; processing typically takes 6–8 weeks.
Application deadlines
Applications are submitted via CAMPUSonline. The university publishes semester-specific application and enrolment pages for each intake (e.g. 'Application & Enrolment Winter Semester 2026/27'). Studienkolleg applicants should submit by 15 June (winter semester) or 15 December (summer semester) to allow time for entrance examination and visa processing. Exact deadlines for bachelor's and master's programmes vary by programme and intake; applicants must check the current deadline page on the student administration website (studierendenkanzlei.uni-bayreuth.de). The uni-assist VPD typically requires 6–8 weeks processing, so early submission is strongly advised.
Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes are taught in German. A growing number of master's programmes are delivered in English, particularly in STEM fields and African studies (BIGSAS graduate school). German-taught programmes require at minimum B2 German proficiency (DSH-1, TestDaF minimum 14 pts / no component below TDN 3, Goethe B2, or equivalent). English-taught programmes require B2 English (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 60, or equivalent) plus A1 German to be demonstrated by the end of the second semester. Some programmes specify higher thresholds (C1/DSH-2); applicants must check individual programme regulations.

Living in Bayern
Bayreuth is a mid-sized city of approximately 75,000 inhabitants in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, Germany. It is internationally known for the annual Richard Wagner Festival (Bayreuther Festspiele), one of the world's most prestigious opera events. The city sits at the edge of the Fichtelgebirge mountains and the Fränkische Schweiz nature park, offering easy access to hiking, cycling, and outdoor recreation. Living costs are significantly lower than in Munich or Frankfurt, making it an affordable option for students. Bayreuth has good rail connections to Nuremberg (~1 hour) and to other Bavarian cities.
Student life & support
The International Office and Welcome Services team provide support for incoming international students and researchers before, during, and after their stay, including assistance with visa applications and housing. The university operates Welcome Service Pont drop-in hours (Tuesday and Wednesday) at the central administration building. Student housing is managed via the Studentenwerk Oberfranken, which operates halls of residence on and near campus; early application is recommended as demand is high. The campus offers university sports facilities, a cafeteria and coffee bars, cultural programming, and a GreenCampus sustainability initiative. The IIK Bayreuth language institute offers German language courses including a B2-level certificate recognised for university admission. The International Office coordinates exchange programmes (Erasmus+, Global partnerships) and dual-degree arrangements with partner universities worldwide.
