About Universität Koblenz

Universität Koblenz is a public research university located in Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate. It describes itself as Germany's youngest university and is organised into four faculties: Educational Sciences, Philology and Cultural Studies, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Computer Science. The university places particular emphasis on teacher education, interdisciplinary research, and its four thematic profile areas: Education, Computer Science, Culture and Communication, and Materials and Environment.

The campus is a compact single site in the north of Koblenz, with short distances between buildings facilitating cross-faculty collaboration. The university serves the northern Rhineland-Palatinate region as a driver of scientific and economic development while maintaining international partnerships and exchange programmes.

International applicants with non-German qualifications apply through uni-assist and are advised to begin the process early, as processing of documents from non-EU countries takes considerably longer. The International Relations Office provides advisory services for prospective students, exchange students, doctoral researchers, and visiting scholars.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees are charged for standard bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes. Students who have already completed a master's degree at a German or other European university pay €650 per semester for a second master's. The semester contribution is €317.30 for continuing students and €327.30 for first-time enrollees (includes a one-off €10 UniCard fee). The contribution covers: €89.00 Studierendenwerk social levy, €19.50 student council (AStA) levy, and €208.80 Deutschlandsemesterticket (nationwide public-transport pass). Rhineland-Palatinate does not charge additional non-EU tuition fees (unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria).

Admission requirements

International applicants with non-German qualifications must apply through uni-assist (€75 for the first programme, €30 per additional programme). A university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) is required; proof of German or English language proficiency may be required depending on the programme. The university does not publish APS certificate requirements explicitly on its pages — Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants should check the APS requirement independently, as it is mandated by the German visa process regardless of the university's own instructions. Sports and music teacher-training programmes require a specific admission test (Eignungsprüfung). The university notes that processing non-EU application documents takes considerably longer and advises early application.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (October start): restricted-admission programmes 15 June – 15 July; unrestricted programmes 15 June – 30 September (26/27 cycle) / 10 October (25/26 cycle). Summer semester (April start): restricted-admission programmes December – 15 January; unrestricted programmes December – 15 March (26) / 28 March (25). International applicants with foreign degrees face deviating deadlines and should confirm directly with the International Relations Office.

Languages of instruction

The majority of programmes are taught in German. A language filter on the study-programme finder lists English and German-and-English as available options, but specific English-taught programmes load dynamically and were not enumerable from the static page. Prospective students should check the programme finder at uni-koblenz.de for current English-language offerings.

Living in Rheinland-Pfalz

Koblenz is a city of approximately 115,000 inhabitants at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site area (Upper Middle Rhine Valley) and is known for Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the German Corner (Deutsches Eck), and its role as a historic trading and military centre. The city is well connected by rail to Cologne (approx. 1 hour) and Frankfurt (approx. 1.5 hours), making it accessible while remaining significantly more affordable than those cities.

Student life & support

Student housing is managed by Studierendenwerk Koblenz, which operates four student residences in Koblenz (Auf dem Hellen Weyer, Simmerner Straße, Von-Cramm-Str. 5–7, and Von-Cramm-Str. 10). Due to high demand, only approximately 5% of students obtain a Studierendenwerk room; private shared flats (WGs) at €350–€450 per month are the common alternative. The Studierendenwerk deposit is €600 and accommodation contracts run for a fixed 6-month semester period. The International Relations Office provides advisory and support services for incoming international students. The semester contribution includes a Deutschlandsemesterticket covering nationwide public transport. Three private church-affiliated dormitories (KHG, ESG, VEGIS) also offer rooms.
