About Universität Mannheim
The University of Mannheim (Universität Mannheim) was founded in 1907 as the Handelshochschule Mannheim and received full university status in 1967. It is a public research university located in the Baroque Mannheim Palace in the city centre of Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg. With approximately 12,000 enrolled students and around 200 professors, it is one of Germany's smaller universities by enrolment but among its most specialised.
Mannheim is recognised as a leading German institution in the economic and social sciences, consistently ranking in the top three in Germany for Business and Economics in international rankings such as Times Higher Education. The university holds Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) for its business programmes and is home to major research institutes including ZEW (Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research) and GESIS (Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences).
Approximately one in five students at Mannheim comes from abroad to pursue a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree, reflecting a strongly international academic environment. Admissions & fees
What it costs
Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU/EEA international students (Bildungsausländer) a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester, in addition to the standard semester contribution. EU/EEA citizens, Swiss nationals with German employment, UK nationals who exercised residence rights before 31 December 2020, holders of permanent residence permits, and recognised refugees are exempt from this fee. The semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) is €194 per semester (2026/27 rate), comprising an €80 administrative fee, €100 student services fee, and €14 student union contribution. Total cost for a non-EU student is therefore approximately €1,694 per semester in mandatory fees, excluding living expenses.
Admission requirements
International applicants (non-EU degree-seeking students) apply through the university's Portal² online application system. For bachelor's programmes, applicants must hold a recognised higher education entrance qualification; German language proficiency at C1 level is required for German-taught programmes. For master's programmes, a completed bachelor's degree (or equivalent first degree) in a relevant subject is required; specific entry requirements and selection criteria are set out in each programme's Auswahlsatzung. Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate before applying; the German consulates in New Delhi (for India), Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou (for China), and Hanoi (for Vietnam) issue these. Application deadlines
Bachelor's programmes: applications for the winter/autumn semester only (no summer intake for bachelor's); deadline typically 1 June - 15 July, with some programmes extended to 31 August. Master's programmes: winter semester applications typically due April 1 - May 15/31 or July 15 (varies by programme); summer semester applications (select master's programmes only) typically 15 October - 15 November of the preceding year. How international applicants apply
No uni-assist. The University of Mannheim does not cooperate with uni-assist; ALL international applicants (EU and non-EU) apply directly through the university's own online application portal (Portal2), uploading documents there. FAQ states: 'The University of Mannheim does not work with uni-assist. All international applicants must therefore apply directly to the University of Mannheim.' No VPD procedure.
Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's programmes and many master's programmes are taught in German; German language proficiency at C1 level is required for German-taught programmes. Several master's programmes, particularly in Business Administration, Economics, and Business Informatics, are offered in English or in a bilingual format. Prospective students should verify the language of instruction for each specific programme on the university's programme finder.

Student housing in Mannheim is organised through the Studierendenwerk Mannheim, which operates several dormitories; private accommodation is also widely available in the city.

Living in Mannheim
Mannheim is a city of approximately 310,000 inhabitants in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region of Baden-Württemberg, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. It is a compact, grid-planned city (its streets are named by letters and numbers rather than traditional names) with a lively cultural scene, diverse food options, and good public transport links. Frankfurt is roughly 45 minutes by train, and Heidelberg is only 15 minutes away, making Mannheim attractive for students who want a large-city feel without Berlin or Munich costs. The city has a strong industrial and business heritage, and the university's location in the central Baroque palace gives it an unusually prominent position in the urban landscape.
