It is a public research university located in the Baroque Mannheim Palace in the city centre of Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg. With approximately 12,000 enrolled students and around 200 professors, it is one of Germany's smaller universities by enrolment but among its most specialised.

Mannheim is recognised as a leading German institution in the economic and social sciences, consistently ranking in the top three in Germany for Business and Economics in international rankings such as Times Higher Education.
