12-month roadmap to arrive in Germany for Winter 2026/27
TL;DR: For an October 2026 start, begin in November 2025. Register for APS in November, sit IELTS or TestDaF in December, submit applications by the 15 January deadline, fund a blocked account of EUR 11,904 by April, book the visa appointment in May, and land by late September. Twelve months buys you about six spare weeks. Nine months buys you none.
Winter Semester 2026/27 opens in October 2026. Work backwards from that date and four queues decide your year, none of them yours to control: the APS certificate (four to eight weeks if you studied in India, China, Vietnam or Mongolia), uni-assist document checks (four to six weeks), the blocked account transfer (two to three weeks) and embassy visa processing (six to twelve weeks). Five months are gone before you have done anything wrong. Add an anabin check on your bachelor degree, a TestDaF or DSH sitting and a DAAD deadline that closes before offers go out, and twelve months stops looking generous.
Why twelve months and not six
APS decides when your certificate is ready. uni-assist decides when your transcripts clear. The mission decides when your visa is done, and the Studentenwerk decides when a room frees up. The one variable you own is how early you join each queue. Twelve months leaves roughly six weeks of slack across the whole chain, which is exactly enough to absorb one late document. Six months leaves you praying that nothing goes wrong twice.

November 2025: cut the list, start APS the same week
Get your shortlist down to eight or twelve programmes and record four things for each: teaching language, deadline, the grade it wants, and whether it admits through uni-assist or its own portal. Our searchable directory of German master and bachelor programmes is the fastest way to build that table. Run your degree through anabin, the KMK database German universities use to decide whether your institution counts as H+, before you fall in love with a course you cannot qualify for. Then register for APS: INR 18,000 in India and four to eight weeks of waiting. What APS asks for, document by document saves you a correction round. Book the English test date in the same sitting.
December 2025: sit the test, build the document pack once
Take the English test now. IELTS and TOEFL results stay valid two years, so a December 2025 score is still good at enrolment. English-taught master programmes usually put the floor at IELTS 6.5; German-taught ones want TestDaF or DSH instead. Start German regardless. A1 to B2 is a matter of months, not weeks, and our structured A1 to B2 German course is built to run alongside a final year.
Assemble the document pack once and reuse it: transcripts, degree certificate, CV, motivation letter, two references, passport copy. uni-assist wants certified copies and sworn translations, and it will return your file for a photocopy that nobody stamped.
January 2026: the deadline that catches people out
Submit before 15 January, the early cut-off many international master programmes use for the winter intake. Others close on 1 March, 31 May or 15 July, so read each programme page rather than trusting one date. Here is the trap: 15 January is also the standard deadline for the summer semester starting in April, so half the advice you find online is answering a different question than the one you are asking. RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and the University of Stuttgart admit through uni-assist, which charges EUR 75 for your first application in a semester and EUR 30 for each one after. TUM and Heidelberg run their own portals. How uni-assist processes a file and issues the VPD explains which route you are on.
February 2026: the month everyone wastes

Nothing arrives in February. That is precisely what makes it useful. Join Studentenwerk dorm waiting lists now, because in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart your position on the list is set by application date, and February beats August by a wide margin. If you have no German address to register with yet, our accommodation support handles that gap. Check DAAD deadlines while you are at it, several of which close before admission offers even go out. And chase APS weekly. Politely, but weekly.
March 2026: the admission letter, then the money
The Zulassungsbescheid is the document the rest of your year hangs on. Accept inside the stated window, often two to four weeks, and formally decline the others so a place is not held for you somewhere you will never go. Open the blocked account the same week: EUR 11,904 for twelve months, released to you at EUR 992 a month. Expatrio, Fintiba and Coracle all open accounts remotely. Where your home bank makes outward remittance painful, our blocked account setup service deals with the bank rather than leaving you to argue with a branch manager.
April 2026: funding, and the name on the transfer
Complete the transfer and get written confirmation that the full amount landed. Allow two to three weeks, because transfers get held for source-of-funds checks. The failure we see most often is not the amount at all: it is a sender name that does not match the passport, which sends the whole thing back.
Buy health insurance in the same month. Statutory student cover with TK, AOK or Barmer runs about EUR 140 a month if you are under 30, and you will need the confirmation twice, once for the visa file and again at enrolment. Public versus private cover, and who is allowed to choose is worth ten minutes before you sign.
May 2026: appointment slots are the real bottleneck
From May to July, embassy slots are the scarcest thing in this entire plan, because every winter applicant in the country needs one in the same window. In India, student visa appointments run through VFS Global for New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. Book the moment one appears, even if a document is still in the post. Order the file exactly as the mission's checklist lists it: passport, admission letter, blocked account and insurance confirmations, APS certificate, language certificates, photos, national visa form. Our visa file check and processing service exists because one out-of-order or missing original costs a whole appointment.
June and July 2026: hand it over, then wait properly
You submit the file, give biometrics and pay the EUR 75 fee. Keep the receipt and the tracking number somewhere you will find them in September. Processing runs six to twelve weeks, and the clock only starts when the mission accepts your file as complete, not on the day you walked in.
Two rules for the wait. No non-refundable flights. And read the email address you gave the embassy every single day, because one query left sitting for a fortnight adds a fortnight to your decision.
August 2026: visa in the passport, then a flight
Collect the passport with the national D visa inside, then book a flight landing in the second half of September. Book a hostel or short-let for the first four weeks too. Almost nobody walks into a permanent flat on arrival, and turning up with nowhere to sleep after a long-haul flight is a bad start to a two-year plan. One thing worth knowing before you sign anything: a German deposit is capped at three months of cold rent under section 551 of the Civil Code, so a landlord asking for more is not following the law.
September 2026: Anmeldung, and the signature that gates everything
Register your address at the local Buergeramt within 14 days of moving in. You need the Wohnungsgeberbestaetigung signed by whoever controls the flat. No signature, no registration, and no argument. That one certificate then gates your bank account, your tax ID and your residence permit, which is why a landlord who will not sign is an emergency rather than an inconvenience. Book the Auslaenderbehoerde appointment the day you register, since Berlin and Munich run weeks behind.
October 2026: enrolment, and what you may earn
Bring original documents, the insurance confirmation and proof of the Semesterbeitrag, which runs EUR 150 to EUR 390 a semester and usually includes the local transport ticket. Once enrolled you may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year at a minimum of EUR 13.90 an hour. At 15 to 20 hours a week that covers rent in most cities. Munich is the exception, and it is not close.
What the year costs before you land
| Item | When | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| APS certificate (India) | Nov 2025 | INR 18,000 |
| uni-assist handling | Jan 2026 | EUR 75 first, EUR 30 each extra |
| Blocked account deposit | Mar to Apr 2026 | EUR 11,904, yours at EUR 992/month |
| Health insurance | From Apr 2026 | about EUR 140/month |
| Student visa fee | Jun 2026 | EUR 75 |
| Rent deposit (Kaution) | Sep 2026 | up to 3 months cold rent, refundable |
| Semester contribution | Oct 2026 | EUR 150 to 390 per semester |
Public universities charge no tuition on most programmes, which means the blocked account, not fees, decides whether the year is affordable for you. Rent is the other half of that answer, and it varies more by city than anything else on this page: see what a year in Germany actually costs, city by city.
Where this timeline usually breaks
- APS started in January. Eight weeks plus one correction round puts the certificate into April, by which point several deadlines have closed.
- An expired language certificate. A test sat in early 2024 is out of validity by October 2026, and nobody tells you until the file is rejected.
- No plan for the first four weeks of housing. A dorm offer that lands in November helps nobody who arrived in September.
Doing the same for Winter 2027/28
Shift every date twelve months and the plan holds: shortlist and APS in November 2026, applications by 15 January 2027, blocked account in March, visa appointment in May, arrival in September 2027. The processing times underneath have been stable for years, so this is not a guess. Miss the window entirely and the April summer semester is your fallback, with a noticeably thinner English-taught catalogue.
