Bioinformatics Master's in Germany: Gottingen, Tubingen in English
TL;DR: Gottingen and Tubingen both run bioinformatics master's in English, but only one is free. Gottingen is in Lower Saxony and charges no tuition. Tubingen is in Baden-Wuerttemberg, which bills non-EU and non-EEA students EUR 1,500 a semester unless you fall into an exempt group. Both want programming and statistics on the transcript.
Bioinformatics admissions in Germany do not care much about the name on your degree certificate. They care about which modules you passed. That is why a graduate of a mid-ranked university with the right coursework beats a famous-name graduate who never took statistics.
Module fit is what gets you rejected
The field sits between biology, computing and maths, so the rejection pattern is predictable. A biology graduate arrives without enough programming. A computer science graduate arrives without enough biology. Either way the committee finds the gap and declines.
Map each program's prerequisite list against your own transcript before you write anything else. Where a module is missing, add it: a statistics course with a graded certificate, a bridging module at home, a documented project in Python or R. Gottingen charges nothing
The Gottingen degree is Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, a four-semester M.Sc. taught in English and tied to the life-science research on campus and in the Max Planck network. Lower Saxony levies no tuition, so your only compulsory payment to the university is the semester contribution. Entry wants a biology, bioinformatics or computational-science bachelor's carrying minimum credits on each side of the field, plus an assessment test. The town is small and cheap, which matters more to your budget than applicants expect.
Tubingen charges EUR 1,500 a semester
Tubingen's Bioinformatics M.Sc. is the one with a bill attached. Baden-Wuerttemberg has charged students who are not nationals of an EU or EEA state EUR 1,500 per semester since winter semester 2017/18 across bachelor's, consecutive master's and Staatsexamen programmes. Over a two-year master's that is about 6,000 euros on top of the semester contribution.
The exempt categories are real but narrow: EU and EEA nationals, doctoral candidates, exchange students on a partnership agreement, double-degree students from partner universities, and Bildungsinlaender. Assume you pay unless the university confirms otherwise in writing. The state-wide rules are in who pays Baden-Wuerttemberg's EUR 1,500 per semester and who is exempt.
The English-taught label hides one more thing here. Only applicants who already hold a bioinformatics bachelor's can finish the degree entirely in English. Arrive from biology, chemistry or computer science and some compulsory modules are German-only, so the university asks for advanced German too.
What you need to apply
- A bachelor's in bioinformatics, biology, computer science or a related quantitative field.
- Programming (Python or R) plus statistics and maths coursework, visible on the transcript.
- English proof: Gottingen asks for C1 level. Tubingen reads its requirement as IELTS 6.5 or the TOEFL equivalent.
- German at C1 for the Tubingen entry variants that carry German-only compulsory modules.

What a year costs
Gottingen: living costs of 900 to 1,100 euros a month, the 11,904 euros parked in a blocked account for the visa, and no tuition. Tubingen: the same living range, plus EUR 1,500 twice a year. Where graduates end up
Pharma, biotech, data analysis and the research institutes themselves.
