Data Science Master's Admission Requirements in Germany
TL;DR: A German data science master's wants a quantitative bachelor's with the prerequisites counted in credit points, not in adjectives. RWTH Aachen also requires a GRE from everyone outside the EU and EEA, at above the 75th percentile in quantitative reasoning, and closes on 1 March for an October start. TUM instead runs an aptitude assessment and charges non-EU students EUR 6,000 a semester. Applicants with Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese or Mongolian documents need the APS first.
Most rejections from German data science programmes are not about your average. They are about a module you never took, or a test you did not know existed. Admissions pulls your transcript, matches it against a published prerequisite list, and stops reading when something core is missing. Fix that first and everything else in this guide is detail.
The prerequisites are counted in credits, not adjectives
"Solid maths background" is how most guides describe the bar. German programmes publish something far more specific, and RWTH Aachen's Data Science M.Sc. is the clearest example: it lists three entry profiles and puts a credit-point figure against each block.
- Computer science profile: Programming 8 CP, Data Structures and Algorithms 7 CP, Databases and Information Systems 6 CP, plus technical and theoretical computer science and mathematics.
- Mathematics profile: Analysis 24 CP combined, Linear Algebra 15 CP combined, plus numerical analysis and stochastics.
- Physics profile: experimental and theoretical physics totalling 35 CP or more, higher mathematics 24 CP, and an advanced lab internship.
Read those numbers against your own transcript before you write a single line of a motivation letter. A student with one three-credit databases course does not have six, and no amount of enthusiasm in the statement changes the arithmetic. RWTH's neighbouring Software Systems Engineering M.Sc. is stricter again, wanting roughly 100 credits across mathematics (26), practical computer science (33), technical computer science (22) and theoretical computer science (18).
One thing worth knowing: several programmes weight the later years of your degree more heavily than the first. A strong final year with relevant electives can offset an earlier dip, so choose what you submit as supporting evidence with that in mind. What grade German masters actually require puts the average in its proper place.
Which bachelor's degrees count
Computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, physics and adjacent quantitative fields. A business-only bachelor's rarely qualifies, whatever the grade. Field requirements vary between universities more than you would expect, so read each one rather than assuming a pattern.

RWTH requires a GRE, and only from you
This is the requirement that catches people who assumed German public universities never ask for standardised tests. RWTH's Data Science M.Sc. states that the GRE General Test is not required for applicants with EU or EEA citizenship, or for anyone who completed their secondary education in Germany. Everyone else has to submit it, and the minimums are published:
- Quantitative reasoning above the 75th percentile, so within the top quarter of test takers.
- Verbal reasoning above the 15th percentile.
- Analytical writing of at least 3.5.
The score has to arrive before the application deadline, not after. Since RWTH's non-EU deadline for the winter intake is 1 March, and GRE results take a couple of weeks to reach institutions, the test itself has to be sat in January at the latest, with a retake slot in reserve. The same rule and the same percentiles apply to RWTH's Software Systems Engineering M.Sc., so this is a faculty-wide policy rather than one programme's quirk.
Note the shape of the exemption. It is not about how good your degree is. It is about citizenship and where you sat your school-leaving exams, which means the strongest non-EU applicant in the pool still needs the test and their EU classmate does not. TUM does it differently, and charges for it
TUM's Data Engineering and Analytics M.Sc. runs 120 ECTS and does not ask for a GRE. Instead it uses an aptitude assessment: a point system scoring your bachelor grade and written documents, producing either an admission, a rejection, or an invitation to interview.
Two practical differences follow. Anyone with a qualification obtained outside Germany has to get it reviewed by uni-assist first, which is a preliminary documentation step with its own 4 to 6 week processing time on top of the university's. And non-EU students pay EUR 6,000 per semester in tuition, so the same degree that is free at RWTH costs EUR 24,000 across four semesters at TUM.
TUM's application window is narrow and easy to miss: 1 February to 31 May for the winter semester, 1 October to 30 November for summer. It closes six weeks before the July date most applicants have in mind.
English proof, and the certificate that gets rejected
These degrees are taught in English, so you need a certificate. RWTH accepts, for a B2 requirement, TOEFL iBT with at least 90 points, IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 60, Cambridge B2 First at grade B or better, or UNIcert II. Where a programme requires C1, the bar moves to TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.0 and PTE 70. TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted, so the minimum has to come from one sitting.
The trap is the shortcut. RWTH's computer science admissions pages say plainly that a Medium of Instruction certificate is generally not accepted. A letter from your Indian university confirming your bachelor's was taught in English will not substitute for a test, and applicants discover this in February with no test slot left. A degree completed in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand does earn an exemption; holding one of those passports does not. How selective it really is
Data science is one of the most applied-to fields in the country. Programmes respond by ranking: grades first, module fit close behind, and at the selective end a converted GPA cutoff somewhere around 2.0-2.5. That cutoff is a filter, not a target. The applicants who convert do something unglamorous. Before applying, they put each programme's credit-point list next to their transcript, line by line, and close any gap with a course or a project instead of hoping nobody checks. That fit, plus a clean file, is the whole game.
APS before anything else
If your documents were issued in India, China, Vietnam or Mongolia, the APS certificate comes before the application, not alongside it. APS India commits only to "at least two weeks" and says it cannot give a fixed processing time, because the clock depends on how fast your university answers the verification letter.
One change worth planning around: from the summer semester 2027 intake, Indian master's applicants whose previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management must also sit the new dMAT test, which costs EUR 150. A pure computer science or mathematics bachelor's sits outside those fields, but an information systems or business analytics degree may not. What it costs
Most data science master's at public universities charge no tuition, and RWTH is one of them: you pay only the semester contribution, EUR 375.19 for winter 2026/27, which includes a nationwide travel pass. TUM is the exception at EUR 6,000 a semester. On top of either, budget living costs and the EUR 11,904 that has to be in a blocked account before the visa is granted.
