Is Germany Good for Indian Students? Honest 2026 Review

Almost 70,000 Indian students were enrolled in the 2025/26 winter semester, which makes India the largest international group in the country. That is the answer to the headline question, and it is not the useful part. The useful part is what those students found out after arriving. So this starts with the frictions rather than the sales points.

Start with what goes wrong

• Admission is strict. German master's are consecutive, so your bachelor's subject has to match the course. Most Indian applicants also need the APS certificate before a university will open the file, and usually document screening through uni-assist on top of it.
• Timelines are long. Add up APS, offers, the student visa and the weeks it sits in a queue, and the move itself, and you are planning 12 to 18 months ahead.
• You will need some German. Plenty of programmes run in English. The job market does not. B1 helps; B2 is what changes which interviews you get.
• The first winter is hard. Cold, four hours of useful daylight in December and administration that moves at its own pace. Most people find year one heavier than they expected.
• Not every degree is free. Two places charge non-EU students: Baden-Wuerttemberg at 1,500 euros a semester, and TU Munich at 4,000 to 6,000 euros a semester for master's programmes.

What you get in return

Public universities charge no tuition. You pay a semester fee of roughly 150 to 350 euros, and the visa asks you to park a year of living costs in a blocked account that pays itself back to you monthly. Our rupee-by-rupee cost breakdown has the figures in lakhs if that is easier to take to a bank.

The work rights are the part students underrate. Non-EU students get 140 full days or 280 half days a year, about 20 hours a week in term, at a 13.90 euros minimum wage, and Germany needs engineers and IT staff badly enough that finding those hours is not the problem. Graduation opens an 18-month window to find qualified work, then a Blue Card, then citizenship at 5 years. A German degree also travels: it is recognised across Europe without further evaluation.

The monthly maths

A strong minimum wage against manageable living costs is why many Indian students here cover most of a month from a side job. Try that arithmetic in London or Boston and it does not work.

What happens after you graduate

You get 18 months to find qualified work, and during that window you may work full-time in any field while you search, which takes the pressure off. Land a role above the salary line and you move to the EU Blue Card: about 50,700 euros in general, or 45,934 euros for shortage occupations and recent graduates. Who it suits, and who it does not

• Suits: engineering, IT and STEM graduates, anyone who wants a strong degree for close to nothing, and anyone treating European residence as the real goal rather than a bonus.
• Does not suit: students who need a one-year credential, students set on living entirely in English, and applicants whose bachelor's does not line up with any German master's.
