MBA Without GMAT in Germany: What Four Schools Accept Instead

Four of the German business schools international applicants ask about most will let you apply with no GMAT score at all. Not as a favour, and not quietly: each has a documented alternative you can check before you spend a euro on test prep. What follows is what each one accepts instead, with the fees and deadlines attached, because the test is rarely the expensive part. If you are still deciding whether the test matters for you at all, start with when German degrees ask for a GRE or GMAT score.

ESMT Berlin sells you a cheaper test

ESMT accepts four admission tests for its full-time MBA: the GMAT, the GRE, the GMAC Executive Assessment, and its own ESMT Business Admissions Test (BAT), described on its admissions page as a two-hour online test costing US$100. Set that against a GMAT registration and weeks of preparation and the arithmetic makes itself.

The rest of the file does not move. You need at least three years of postgraduate professional experience by the time the programme starts, and there is a EUR 100 application fee. The full-time MBA runs 15 months from a January intake and tuition is EUR 50,000. For the 2027 intake, applications closed in rounds on 15 September, 31 October and 8 December; later rounds mean fewer seats and less scholarship money left, so the round you apply in matters more than the test you took.

WHU makes the test one of five options

WHU's full-time MBA in Duesseldorf is the clearest example of a school that does not treat a score as the gate. Alongside an undergraduate degree, a minimum of two years of postgraduate work experience and an English certificate, WHU asks you to satisfy one of five "excellent fit" criteria:

• An external certification: GMAT, GRE, the Executive Assessment, the WHU Admissions Test or CFA Level II.
• A PhD or doctorate.
• A business-related degree plus three years of professional experience.
• Graduating in the top 5 per cent in a non-business field, plus three years of business experience.
• Extraordinary achievement, as assessed by WHU.

Four of those five have nothing to do with a test centre. The English bar is specific: TOEFL iBT at least 100 on the old scale, or 5.5 overall with 5.0 in every sub-section on the new one, or IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in every sub-section, unless English is your first language.

The deadline structure is the part to write on your wall, because WHU sorts applicants by paperwork rather than by preference. For the September start, applicants who need an APS certificate apply by 30 April, applicants who need a visa by 31 May, and applicants who need neither by 15 July. For calibration, WHU describes its full-time cohort as 40 to 50 students with an average age of 29, around 80 per cent international and five years of professional experience on average, over 12 months and 60 ECTS.

Frankfurt School prefers a test but names its exemptions

Frankfurt School states that a GMAT or GRE is preferred, with the Frankfurt School Admission Test as the alternative, and publishes the profiles it exempts: holders of a doctorate, graduates of universities in the QS top 400, graduates in the top 5 per cent of their institution, and holders of CFA Level II. That is a checkable list rather than a discretionary favour, which makes it worth reading your own CV against line by line.

The full-time MBA runs 12 months, entirely in English, and tuition is EUR 42,000 for 2026 plus a EUR 400 enrolment fee. Deadlines are staggered by nationality: non-EU applicants by 31 May 2026, EU passport holders by 31 July 2026, for a start on 1 September 2026. Early application is discounted rather than merely encouraged: EUR 6,000 off by 30 November 2025, EUR 4,000 by 28 February 2026 and EUR 2,500 by 31 May 2026. Applying eight months early is worth more than most scholarships you will be eligible for.

KLU only wants a GMAT if you lack a degree

Kuehne Logistics University's MBA in Leadership and Supply Chain Management states its academic requirement as a bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS in any subject, or a GMAT score of at least 600. The test is the alternative route in, not the hurdle. You also need a minimum of three years of relevant work experience, English proficiency where your background requires it, and an interview with the academic director.

It is a part-time programme: 18 months of block seminars running Friday to Monday, taught in English, starting every September, with a tuition fee of EUR 34,200 and an application deadline of 28 August. That format suits someone already working in Germany far better than someone applying from abroad on a student visa, so check the residence-permit question before the admissions one.

How to ask, and what actually moves the decision

You make the case inside the application, not before it. The evidence is your CV and your transcript: what you have run, for how long, and how numerate your degree was. What moves it is three or more years of genuinely relevant responsibility, a clean academic record, and a statement that connects the two to this specific programme. What does not is a long CV of junior roles, or a request that reads as asking to be excused.

Where a school publishes objective exemption criteria, as Frankfurt School and WHU do, stop arguing and start evidencing. A university ranking, a class rank letter or a CFA Level II pass is a document, not a persuasion problem.

What skipping the test does not get you out of

The rest of the file stands: work experience, proof of English, the interview, the application fee. The 11,904 euros blocked account for the visa is untouched by any of it, and the tuition above runs from EUR 34,200 to EUR 50,000 before you have paid rent. What happens after you graduate
